Voter ID requirements and effectiveness

There sure is a lot of excitement about Voter ID requirements in the press lately. The discussion breaks down neatly into partisan lines like so:

  • PRO: If we require voters to present photo ID, we will reduce fraud.
  • CON: Poor people and minorities are the only people likely to be affected like this, making the effects disturbingly partisan/

You've got a point- if the bar could be lowered to the most basic "I don't care, so long as it has a picture and the first name is right" standard, we'd probably be in better shape. I guess part of what I'm worried about is how "check photo ID" will be interpreted.
