UNDER YOUR SPELL. omg I died. One, I can't believe you included a Buffy song, two, I can't believe it's my favourite Buffy song.

I thought about sticking only to "traditional" stage and movie musicals, but then I thought about what Glee itself is, and decided that -- y'know what? -- television and films such as Buffy and HSM "counted". Plus, between this and everything else he's done, I'm rather partial to Whedon, myself. In the end, that slot came down to "Under Your Spell" and "A Little Bit In Love" from Wonderful Town, and... Buffy won out -- in no small part because I wanted to reference the Willow and Tara story, particularly the undertones of being slightly blinded and misled, which I thought was appropriate for Kurt at that point in the story, when he was hanging off Blaine's every word. I regret nothing. XD

Awww, thank you so much for this lovely comment! I was a bit worried about Act I, because I was really struggling to define a cohesive narrative arc for Klaine pre-2x16, especially after the big Blaine reset pre- vs. post-hiatus. I'm so glad to hear that it made you laugh!

BTW, I'm loving the mental image of Kurt compiling a Broadway playlist. Between "Defying Gravity", "Rose's Turn", and "As If We Never Said Goodbye", that is something he would totally do, eh?

Hi! (So I can tell from your username that we have at least one thing in common! ;)) Thank you so much for this analysis! I loved hearing your perspective of how each song worked for you. I actually find it interesting that you find "One" to be cute, because I view it to be a very ironic and wistful song. In the play, that number is about the irony of the chorus line members working so hard to stand out and be hired for the show, when their ultimate job is to dance in the background, wearing identical outfits, blending together in one giant mass. This story, for me, parallels Kurt winning prom queen, because McKinley bestowed upon him a "prize" that was, at its core, a mockery and negation of his individuality. But, at the same time, he is special and he is valued -- by Blaine and the glee club -- so he chooses to take that moment of humiliation and -- by going back and accepting his crown -- turn it into a moment of triumph. I wasn't really sure how to handle prom, because there wasn't much overt Klaine in it, but I wanted ( ... )

That's a really interesting analysis. Don't worry, when I get on certain subjects, I can write novels. I once wrote an entire essay in a Facebook comment, reasoning why I thought Stephen Sondhiem is better than Andrew Lloyd Webber (a strong personal bias). I think it's a really great thing that you can analyze to that level.

I see the "One (Reprise)" as a celebration of strength as a unit, overcoming obstacles, and success after hard work. In terms of ACL those are of course the strength of the ensemble and the challenges of the audition and rehearsal. As far as Klaine goes, it is the strength of the Kurt and Blaine together, overcoming the stares and taunts of bullies. Sort of the "They can't touch us or what we have" idea, which is really sweet.

I can't think of another song to represent Klaine at prom. Several pop up in my mind, but nothing actually seems right. If I ever think of something, I'll get back to you, but "One" is really nice.

Okay, so I am totally geeking out right now. I don't usually get to talk to anybody about stuff like this, so this discussion is like crack to me. BTW -- I'm completely with you with regards to Sondheim vs. Webber; the former is an undisputed genius (IMO), while the latter, as a general rule, is just a bit too stuffy and ponderous for me (although I do think much of his music is quite pretty).

Anyway, back to "One". :) I think my personal interpretation of "One (Reprise)" is colored by the story of Cassie which preceded the finale -- the way that Zach initially stymied her audition because he thought she was too good for the chorus line, and the way he kept (quite brutally) calling her out for for adding too many flourishes to her dancing, which caused her to stand out too much when the group was practicing "One" (non-reprise). After seeing Zach's frustration, I was left with the impression that he certainly felt that it'd be a dubious honor to cast Cassie in the show, because the chorus line is not an appropriate place for a ( ... )
