"Aren't boys supposed to have superior hand-eye co-ordination?" She asks, raising her eyebrows at him in disappointment. She digs her toes into the edge of the hand-me down leather couch in Ellen's New York Apartment. You see, there's this guy and truth be told, he's not anything like any of the guys she's been with. He's not rough and mean, or ( Read more... )

"I guess not," he replies, tossing his controller to the ground with slightly more grace than her. "But to be honest, I'd rather be here with you than out in the streets. I mean, no offense, but...New York kinda smells."

Coming from a small town, Ichigo was not exactly what you would call 'prepared' for something quite so different as New York City. He thought he was, of course, but he wasn't. The smells, the sounds, the taste of the air - all of it is so different here, so strange, that he's feeling very much out of his depth.

"Not that I'm not liking it here," he quickly amends, casting a tiny smile her way. (He's hardly EVER scowling around her now. It's really quite alarming). "It's just different. But in here it's just...not. Not so much, anyways, and with you I don't really mind any of the stuff that seems strange to me. I think I'm actually getting used to it, actually."

Maybe not the smell, but the rest of it is bearable when it means he gets to be alone with her.

There's a brief sense of alarm when he loses sight of Kaye, but he only takes a second to find her again despite the small crowd of men and women disembarking from the train.

"I'll be sure to mention it. I didn't think it would be that bad, actually." It can be hard to imagine what it would be like to find metal almost poisonous to be near. Rubbing her back gently, Ichigo glances around at their surroundings.

It isn't the nicest area, though he doesn't think they're likely to be shot at any moment. A bit run down, he would probably describe it. Not the neighborhood you bring your valuables to, but maybe not the worst place to find yourself in the middle of the day. He's not worried about their chances, but the thing they're going towards is certainly making him a bit nervous.

"Still want to do this?"

"She might not even be there y'know." It's an attempt to cheer him up, even as she struggles to straighten her legs. They've come all this way, she's not about to chicken out now.

"I'm sure."

They walk, for hours it seems like, though it can't be more than half an hour. Kaye sings softly under her breath as she follows the road until she comes to a place where her voice stops short in her throat. The sun is already dipping, making the forest seem darker than ever.

'Was it you, girl?' The memory...she can almost hear the ragged breathing and smell the rain. The day that her whole world turned on it's head when she looked into silver eyes and lost her heart.

She blinks away the tears before Ichigo can see them, veering off the road and into the heavy growth of the trees. She grips his hand tightly now, this is faerie territory. No birds sing here, but the forest is not malevolent, only eerie - as though there is something different...slightly off.

Everything seems fine until they get to the heavy area of trees, where Kaye pulls him off the well-worn path and into the unknown. He's not one to be scared of new things, or of the unknown, but the hairs on the back of his neck are saying otherwise. There's something strange about this part of the woods, something odd. Something not normal. It's familiar territory, but it's not quite what he's used to nonetheless.

Once or twice he opens his mouth to speak, but Ichigo decides against it each time. It doesn't seem like the time or place for questions. Never show doubt when confronted with the supernatural, with magic or the unknown. It's a rule that's served him well, this false bravery and inflated bravado, and he intends to follow it now.

Head held high and his heart racing, he follows her closely.

They come to the Glass swamp in a kind of hushed awe. Everything here glitters and glistens with the dying sun in colors you've only ever seen in your dreams. There are shards of bottle that look old enough to make a person a fortune right alongside newer brown bottles of Budweiser with peeling labels. When it comes right down to it this is the perfect reflection of Fae nature. Light and dark, sharp and smooth, old and new...a perfect enigma.

The pixie skirts the edge of the water, calling softly and for a second she is almost certain that nothing will happen ( ... )

There is very little for Ichigo to do at the moment. This is Kaye's territory, not his. This is her kind, not his. She knows what she came here for, and he can only guess. Seeing this woman before him, this Pixie, with her half-real swamp and her tangled hair and her bowl full of eggs, Ichigo is suddenly very much aware that he is going to have a part to play in what's to come. So be it then, he thinks. The more he can do the better he feels.

"We'll take our chances," he says, finding his voice to be much braver than he feels. "We may not be alike, but we're going to try anyways. Whatever happens."

He wants to point out that he's not exactly mortal, but it hardly seems the time for nitpicking.

"Roiben was fae." She lets go of Ichigo's hand and kneels forward, only to find the Thistlewitch's hand on her hair; consoling her with a gentle pat ( ... )

Suspicious and wary eyes follow every move that both women make as Ichigo does his best to keep up with a conversation he only understands half of. What he IS able to figure out, however, is that the bloody mess that slips out of the broken egg is not a good sign. Kaye's face and the Thistlewitch's voice confirm this, but even deep in his gut he knows.

Bad omens can sometimes be hard to ignore.

"What does it mean?" Not willing to beat around the bush, Ichigo decides to move straight for the kill. There's one thing he wants to know and one thing only. "What does that mean, all the blood and...that."

"It means we're screwed." Her voice is on the fine edge of the madness, of surety that nothing will ever change what they now know.

"Last time my egg practically exploded and that didn't turn out --"

She turns from Ichigo and holds a short, hushed conversation with her faerie friend. The Thistlewitch grips Kaye's shoulder, offering words of comfort, but in the end only five words are loud enough to be heard by anyone but the Pixie:

"This is what you choose?"

Kaye doesn't have a choice. She followed her gut and her stupid tingling goosebumps. She threw herself headfirst into the feeling of coarse orange hair against her fingertips and the thought of how his lips would taste and now...she has no option.

"Yes." It comes out a croak and she stands, wiping her hands onto her pantyhose. Even after washing with stain-remover, the red smear remains; a memory of this painful day.

She takes his hands in hers, first one and then the other. Kaye Fierch looks up at him with a split-pixie grin no-one can replicate.

"Fuck the future, right?"

It seems that many choices are being made here, some of which Ichigo doesn't understand and some of them he does. He knows that whatever the egg might mean (not that he's saying he believes it), it won't change his mind. Not about her, not about them, not about anything. When she takes his hands in hers, he does his best to return her smile in kind and gives her fingers a little squeeze.

"Yeah," he agrees. "Fuck the future. I don't care what happens, what anyone says. No offe-" He's turned to speak this last part to the Thistlewitch, but she's already disappeared by that time, leaving Ichigo with his sentence trailing off. "...uh, okay. Never mind I guess."

"You'll never see one if they don't want you to." She says wistfully, wondering if they'll ever have a fight so big that she can use that to her advantage. There's a niggling worry, that they might never get the chance to have a fight that big.

Blood. Discord. Fuck the future.

"Wanna go to the arcade?" She waggles her eyebrows at him, twirls and takes off in the opposite direction, he better be fast, or he might just lose her.

It's always a worry, one of many that comes with dating a pixie. If he blinks, will she be gone? Will she grow bored and filled with wanderlust one day, looking for something new and shiny? These are not the worries that plague his mind now, but rather ones that seep in at night when he isn't expecting them. Worries that stretch on far into the future.

Worries that stem from the idea of being together for a very long time.

"Hey, wait up!" He's right behind her with a few quick steps, but he lets her keep just a little distance ahead of him. There's no fun in chasing if it's so easy to catch.

Then again, maybe he's done chasing now. Maybe he doesn't need to anymore.
