Contrary to popular belief, Duncan didn’t always stand idly by. Duncan Kane knew how to kick ass. Yeah, usually he prefered not to act on it, let things pass by, but when he was mad, boy, he stayed mad. And that’s when he sure knew how to kick some serious ass.
He never meant to do anything actually, but he started it all. He was the one that came to Duncan, with a smug smile on his face, and said ‘hello’ like nothing had ever happened, like he hadn’t kissed Veronica.
The funny thing is, it wasn’t about her at all.
Duncan watched in slow motion as his fingers clasped to form a fist, moving towards Troy’s chin. It was somehow exciting. Probably in a bad way, but exciting. As if he had left his body and was just watching, while someone else took over. He felt the hardness of Troy’s chin right under his fingers and thought maybe he should have hit harder, after all, nothing felt like it was broken.
“WHAT THE HELL?”
That bastard still could talk. Duncan didn’t answer, but didn’t hit back either. He just looked at Troy with his icy blue eyes, his lips narrowed, forming a thin angry line.
Troy must have had an eureka moment, because something lit in his eyes as he quickly tried to reach for Duncan to reassure him.
“Look, Duncan, if this is about Ve-“
“Shut the fuck up, Troy.”
There was so much anger in his voice, so much hate and disgust as he spat out the words, and yet he stood still. If anyone had seen him, they would have said he had a poker face on, but Duncan didn’t actually needed one. Everytime he got this angry, he froze from the outside, masking the volcano erupting inside. He so needed his icy looks, otherwise no one would stay to watch his green monster coming out.
Troy looked right inside Duncan’s eyes, never hesitating a second. “I think I like her, Duncan.”
Duncan always had flashbacks whenever his heart broke. He remembered the time when they were younger and Troy had fallen for this girl, Duncan was the one to give him a shoulder to cry on. While Troy actually cried, Duncan silently watched him, letting Troy’s tears slide down the skin on his arm. The damp tears made him feel so hurt and so warm all at the same time. He remembered their first kiss. He was so fucking afraid that Troy would push him away and call him a freak. But no such thing happened. Troy kissed him back and their tongues met as their fingers clasped. But shortly after, he left for good. When he returned, Duncan thought that this was their chance at a fresh start, the real beginning of what had never finished. Duncan had felt like he was returning to life.
Duncan Kane should have guessed that nothing would ever work out just fine for him.
His second punch was harder than the first. This one made Troy fall heavily to the pavement, hitting his head on the way down. That was what probably started the bleeding. The third one hit his mouth and broke a few teeth. The fourth was the one that probably broke his chin. The fifth made a cracking sound, as if his skull had crashed into his brain.
The sixth one splashed a drop of blood on Duncan’s face. As he felt it slide down his cheek, he never felt so hurt and so warm all at the same time.
