i've been sick all week with the sinuses from hell. and i really do mean sinuses *from hell* - i was off for the first couple of days, went back to work on wednesday... and dear god was that a mistake. thankfully everyone at work seems to be similarly suffering so it doesn't reflect too badly on me...

oh goodness yes - read the books in order of writing. it suddenly makes sense of why the artwork in, say, "the cigars of the pharoah" is so much more detailed than that of "tintin in america". he went back and updated them - if you find a copy of one of the herge biographies (preferably one of the big "art book" ones, because it'll have all the models and background research in) you'll see the process. assistants sent about on travels to do background research, frequently drawing them for the books themselves, whilst herge focuses on the characters and the plot.some people say that the new versions lose the "soul" of the original, but that's nonsense - they're just different

but yeah - i thought *i* was a bit of a herge nerd too, and then i find out about jacobs! worth tracking down because visually they're a *feast* but BOY do you realise what a genius herge was in comparison... it's like hitchcock versus a really good hitchcock pastiche, if you follow me
