Er.. "that they're both small packages" is supposed to be "that they're both small cities"

I've been checking for months.
it's average for any flight into or out of Mqt. to cost about $500, sometimes almost $600. and the flight days I'm looking at are not on weekends... so I didn't know that.

I'm gonna look into youth hostels for lodging... if not, I'm borrowing Kyle's tent and camping in his backyard! I suppose (if money permits) I'll be able to spring for a hotel room for a night.

and because I don't own a car, it is actually more expensive for me to drive... I looked at renting a car for the week and it's about $500 after all the fees... that doesn't include the extra insurance fee (cause my insurance doesn't cover rentals) or gas or food and lodging. Driving would cost about $700 or so... and Marquette is a thousand miles from Rapid City, for your information. It's a 2 day drive, unless you wanna drive 16 hours in a straight shot.

and hitchiking isn't an option.

Fly in and out on Tuesdays apparently. My mom just booked a flight for me and saved $100 on the ticket by just making it so I fly in and out on Tuesdays. The weird things she can find out. She's super experienced at this saving money on flights thing.

Borrowing Kyle's tent is a good idea! You should seriously suggest that!

Ah! I know where I messed up. I was thinking about 800 miles from Spokane to Denver driving, but that's flying, and I was comparing it to that. Yeah, a thousand miles in a day's pretty rough unless you have two drivers.

But yeah, I would try signing up for Expedia and see if you can find a way to get it set up so they'll e-mail you when rates drop. Also, play around with travel dates. That's how my mom saved $100. It's amazing what little things will do.

If its roundtrip, and from a regional airport instead of a hub like Detroit Metro, its not bad. Not great...but not bad.

it is roundtrip and from a regional airport TO a regional airport.

I checked Detroit Metro too. it's about the same price.

Well... coming from my perspective, hitching it and then being a vagabond for a few days while your there would be fun! But in reality...

Check on the prices of youth hostels. Sometimes you can stay at them for 5 dollars a night or something. All depends. Also, I have lots of friends that take the greyhound places too. Now, this is not the most comfortable option at all, but really, its cheap. I think from Muskegon to milwaukee is like 50 bucks. And really, living and sleeping on park benches and outside isnt that bad, just getting hasled by police and such kinda sucks, but its really not bad if you have a sleeping mat.

I myself would never be able to afford flying, and it would never be an option unless I somehow fell into an amazing amount of money. In which case road tripping is much cooler anyway.

well, hitching it for me probably wouldn't be as safe... you know... being little and unarmed. and I suppose being a girl might factor into that equation, but just a bit.

I am planning on looking into the hostels in the area... but if worse comes to worse, a tent and my thermarest will work just fine!

Greyhounds... no. too much time on the road... I suppose I'll check it out, but still... well. I did meet cool people one of the last times I was on one...

the only reason flying is an option is cause I have no vehicle and no spine to hitchike...

I don't know when you planned to go but, if you can fly out of Detroit, try frontier airlines (frontierairlines.com). Big airlines like to rake you over the coals for these little western cities, but Frontier is a regionally based company (out of Denver), and if you book at least a month in advance, you can get flights to Rapid City (from Detroit) for $400-$450. Maybe less. I love frontier, I fly em all the time when I go to Billings. Leather seats and doritos!

As for hotels, I stick to Best Westerns. You get a lot for 50 bucks.

FYI-if you drive, it's about a 12 hour drive (more if you stop a lot) and plan to fill up at least 3 times. So that's about $150 in gas. Take someone with you, South Dakota gets old real quick. Rapid City is my favorite part of SD. It's not worth the drive if you're only staying a day or two.

I apologize. The flight I was looking at said Dodge City, not Rapid City. Brain fart.

Frontier doesn't fly into Rapid City, but it does fly into Gillette, WY, which is about 2 hours away. Less convenient, but if it saves a couple hundred bucks might be worth while.
