A song I recently rediscovered:

Jewel - Down So Long

Yeah, yeah, I know. Jewel's Spirit album has some seriously vom-inducing songs on it ("if I could tell the world just one thing, it would be that we're all okay" -- REALLY?), but this song is all growly and cynical. It could easily slot into Fiona Apple's When the Pawn album. Love it ( Read more... )

Like the time Johnny injured himself during Grand Prix season by daring Evan Lysacek to a handstand contest in Russia. (Amazing.)

WHAT. Thank you for reminding me I still need to read this book.

I'm curious to see what you think of the rest of ASOIAF since you found the first 2 bloated! I found the first 3 relatively page-turn-y but 4 was a complete drag and I'm putting off 5 for fear of the same.

Aww, I LOVE the idea of the baby name book as a writing tool! Actually, having bought several of those books myself a few years ago, I found a lot of them became outdated really quickly. One celebrity will name their baby something, and suddenly it'll be the hottest name out there, when a book published even a year before will call it "old-fashioned" (the Julia Roberts and resurgence of "Henry" comes to mind). They were good for name origins, but when they started predicting the horrible things that would happen to your child on the playground if he/she had a name...maybe that was done more for writers than parents (really, how would you know, baby name book? :)

Great point about needing names to suit the times, though -- probably why so many TV shows have characters named Jack -- a Jack can be 80, 50, 30 or 10. :/
