In 'A Lack Of Color' by Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard sings, "this is fact not fiction, for the first time in years". I've been thinking about that lyric a lot recently as I realize that, hey, I think I liked it better when Ben was singing about fiction. ( more )

Huh! It's funny, because I caught onto Death Cab late -- I got into them with the song "Transatlanticism". So I haven't listened to their early stuff as much - the albums I have are Transatlanticism, Plans and Narrow Stairs, of which my favorite is solidly Plans with Transatlanticism coming in a very close second (obviously, since my journal layout comes from "Passenger Seat" -- which IS an optimistic song!).

But anyway, what I find funny about it, considering when we caught up to them, is that what I really like is their musical accomplishment (sometimes in simple ways) and devastatingly realistic lyrics.

But, I can totally understand how views would differ. I wonder if The Postal Service has changed this dynamic at all too? If Ben has an outlet for poppier, lighter moods to his music - does it sort of filter where things get placed and performed?
