Definately light_fingers's fic, particularly Playing Games which is at her journal around summer of 2004 I think.

I generally only read Pete/Carl AU, which if I'm remembering correctly you're not an AU fan, but inkandfakefurs's AU fics are awesome particularly England's Dreaming, which is just about the best, most fucked up, fic of any fandom I've read. I think you have to join the community to read that one.
