break the terror

I'm fairly ambivalent to Panic! At the Disco at the moment (for various reasons, all of which are too boring to go into), but I was reading Rae's impromptu meta on the Nothing Rhymes With Circus tour and it got me thinking about orchestrated homoeroticism.

Forget about the (society-wide small) number of people who will watch Y Tu Mama Tambien ( Read more... )

It's sort of amazing, isn't it? It's gratifying to see, in a way. (If the absolutepunk interview ever surfaces, I'll be curious to see if my question about their stage-gay was asked/answered.)

I'm more amazed that a generally Japanese/visual kei genre style choereographing is showing up in American shows.

They totally beat Panic! out by 1980s in the construction of choreographed gay being mainstream.

I'm more convinced it'll be a statement like with males and lesbians (i.e. lesbians are hot! but only when the hot chicks do it and I get to join.)

Yes, but Take That never kissed onstage. That's where the line lies for me. Homoeroticism is everywhere and in mainstream culture it's (bizarrely) rarely directly equated with homosexuality. But kissing? That's a romantic, sexual act. There's no way you can pass that off in a jocular "oh, they don't mean anything by it!" way (which is what I always saw happening with Take That).

I'd recommend reading what Rae and Sara have said about Panic!, because they say it with a lot more articulation than me.

I'm sure TT used to kiss on stage. Certainly I recall Robbie kissing Mark on the cheek at times.

I'll have to watch the new DVD again, but I've got recollections of them doing it on the new tour as well.
