You know how there are series which you like and are excellent but then they'll do something dumb and you spend years frothing over it, writing long, rambly rants about how it was the Worst. Thing. Ever? (Y halo thar, Buffy.)

Doctor Who is not that show for me ( Read more... )

I've heard rumors fandom doesn't like River.

Hmm... Well, I don't like her nor do I dislike her. I find her curious and interesting but I'm not yet emotionally engaged with her character. It's too early for me to tell, really (since I assume she'll appear again at some point?).

BTW, I've been meaning to add you in my reading list I liked your Life stories and your Life rec post. Hope you don't mind?

Well, that's understandable - she only appeared in the one storyline, after all, so there isn't much obligation. Perhaps I'm just sensitive to the issue? I've been watching some of the more unpleasant aspects of fandom come down on female characters in Supernatural recently, so there could be some reaction to that there.

I've got an open friending policy, so I don't mind at all. Heck, I'm flattered you liked my stuff. :)

I was thinking more about our conversation where you said the second episode of each season really sets the theme for that season, and thought about Pompeii. I think this season is building off of last year's "Timey Wimey Stuff" in that we keep seeing instances where things have happened and will always happen. The Doctor can't stop the volcano from erupting because it just DOES. They save the Ood and say there's no way a race can just be born as slaves, and then we find they're naturally born with brains in their friggin' hands, making them easy to conquer. And of course River.

Alternate theory: Pompeii had a bunch of tragicly destined women with foresight that everyone else hated and didn't recognize their specialness. Then we got the Doctor's daughter, River, a little girl library, and the forthcoming return of Rose - season of the Mary Sue! I'm calling it!
