[ Anne/Diana | PG | 1/1 ]

Bittersweet, with lovely writing much in the style of the novels themselves. I love the mood of this piece--the future wide and unknowable, and the past and the person most cherished.

    "Di, darling," she said abruptly.

"You’ve that look in your eyes, Anne. What are you thinking?"

Anne had an idea; her face was more animated than Diana had seen it all afternoon. They might, she suggested, act out one of her stories one last time, a final game to cement the true ending of their childhoods. "One more story, Diana. After you’re married we’ll never playact again. You’ll be far too grown-up."

Hmm. I’m rather torn about this fic. One one hand, there’s infidelity. On the other, there’s lovely writing, and wonferful warmth between Diana and Anne.

It's a day full of do-you-remembers, forget-me-nots, and every excellent kind of cake. It's a day when Diana feels slender, when Anne feels carefree, when their smiles are almost girlish, when the sun is a new-found friend, when Diana's back doesn't bother her even after a two-mile hike through the woods, when the roses in Hester's garden are as sweet as ever, and Anne's flushed face as mesmerizing.
