Do You Know Karate? Because Your Body Is Kicking.

It was another night where his mom was working late, and he really didn't want to stay at home. He didn't really feel like hanging out with anyone either though. It was just one of those weird nights where he felt like needed to be alone. It was kind of hard to get alone time when he was a popular guy and was in Glee and football (and basketball and baseball) and then all the parties and stuff he was expected to go to. Sometimes a guy just needed to be alone and think, even if that totally made him a chick or whatever. So here he was in the parking lot of the city park, laying on the hood of his car, just kind of staring at nothing. So totally manly. He thought he heard some distant footsteps coming his way, but he decided to ignore it. What were the chances of it being someone he knew when it was this late on a school night?

Santana had terrible insomnia. She was lucky on most nights to get one to two hours of sleep. On the nights when she couldn't sleep, she ran. Her mind emptied when she did. Everything that had happened that day, that week, that month just faded away and the only thing that existed was her sneakers hitting the pavement. She often ran by the city park. She liked sitting on the swings or the rusted out merry-go-round, but this time there was a car in the parking lot. That was weird. Her hand moved to the waistband of her spandex work-out capris where her pepper spray was, but then she recognized the car. Finn Hudson's piece of shit excuse for a car. What was he doing out here?

She slowed her run to a jog as she got to the car. "Finn?"

Finn heard the running coming closer but it didn't sound like the person was being chased and they weren't screaming bloody murder or anything, so he was fairly sure it was just some person going for a night run. He'd done that a few times, when he couldn't sleep and was too hyped up do sit around and play video games. Only when the running stopped all of a sudden in front of his car he sort of hoped that this person wasn't the axe-murderer on the prowl instead of the victim caught alone in the middle of the night. Except this maybe axe-murderer knew his name. And it sounded like a girl. Actually it sounded like Santana Lopez, which was really weird. He sat up slightly from the hood of his car and turned his head to look at where the voice was coming from. Sure enough there was Santana standing in front of him in jogging clothes.

"Uh, hey, Santana. What are you doing here?"

"I was going to ask you that." Santana's eyes took in him and his car in a swift movement before moving back to his face. "Isn't it a little late to be hanging out in the park alone?"

"Isn't it a little late for you to be running around in... er, spandex?" He raised an eyebrow at her awkwardly. He wasn't even sure why he commented on her attire but now he couldn't take it back, so...

Santana's lips pulled into a smirk. "Better than running around in a clown costume." She moved to his car and leaned against the hood, taking the opportunity to rest and catch her breath.

Finn chuckled. "Oh uh, you can come sit up here if you want," he said as he scooted to the left side of the hood to give her room.

Santana didn't move any further up the hood. She uncapped the water bottle in her hand and took a long drink. "So why are you out here?"

Well nothing like a sweet taste of rejection. But whatever. It shouldn't matter if Santana was rejecting him. Besides it wasn't really a big deal. It was just sitting next to each other on the hood of his car. "Uh, just didn't feel like being at home right now?" He shrugged "What's your excuse?"

"I don't sleep." Santana glanced at him over her shoulder. "So I run." She poured a little water into her hand and ran her hand over the back of her neck.

Finn raised an eyebrow again. Well that was weird. He wondered how she did it. She was always so damn Cheerio-perky. If he never slept he would probably be biting people's heads off left and right. "Oh, well that sucks."

Santana laughed. "Yeah. It sucks." She scooted back on the hood so she could lean against the windshield. "Won't your mom be worried if she wakes up and you're gone?"

Finn shrugged, not noticing any sort of coddling she might have been doing. "She's at work." He was silent for a few moments. "Won't your parents care that you're out in the middle of the night? I mean, isn't it kind of dangerous?" He resisted adding on 'since you're a girl' because he was pretty sure she could kick his ass if she wanted to. She seemed pretty small but deadly.

"My parents won't notice. Daddy takes pain pills for his leg that knock him out and Mama would be glad if I disappeared." Santana shrugged, setting her water bottle down beside her. "Besides, I can take care of myself. I know how to throw a punch and take someone down if they try to touch me."

Finn frowned. "Oh. Well that sucks too." That must be a bummer, not being noticed by your parents. Or if your parents wanted you to disappear, like Santana's mom wanted her to apparently. He couldn't even imagine that. He and his mom were really tight (they were pretty much all each other had in the family department after all since his dad died) and it was always weird to think of other kids not having the same relationship with their parents.

"Yeah I don't doubt that," he smirked slightly.

Santana smirked at him. "I could kick your ass. Don't test me, Hudson." She tried not to, but the corners of her mouth pulled into a smile and she shook her head.

Finn held out his hands and laughed. "I wasn't about to test you. I believe you." He continued chuckling before laying back on the hood of his car.

Santana watched him for a moment then brought a knee to her chest and looped her arms around it. She stayed silent, not feeling the need to fill the silence with meaningless chatter.

Finn glanced over at Santana, smiling slightly at seeing her sort of relax. She was uptight a lot of the time so it was nice seeing her in a different light. Well it was technically really dark out right now, but the metaphor still applied.

Santana's brown eyes moved back to Finn when she felt him looking at her. "What are you thinking?"

"Oh." The question kind of surprised him. "Uh, you just look happy. Or like, you know, not stressed. Uh... yeah." He looked away, slightly embarrassed that he just admitted he was studying her emotions or whatever.

Santana felt that tugging at her lips again as she tried not to smile. "I'm mellow. What about you?"

Finn laid his head back against his windshield. "I'm mellow too I guess. It's nice not doing anything sometimes." He was sure Santana could understand that. She had the same social pressures that he did.

Santana nodded and rested her chin on her knee. "Why didn't you want to be home?"

"Well no one is there. It's kind of boring. I can only play so much video games," he said with a chuckle. "Uh, why can't you sleep?" He glanced at her though didn't sit up or anything.

"Insomnia. I have pills I can take, but they knock me out and I don't like them." Santana looked at him, studying his profile. "What video games do you like? Ever play Halo?"

Finn gave her a confused look. "Aren't they supposed to knock you out?" It didn't make much sense to him to complain about not being able to sleep but not take the medicine to make it better. Because they were from a doctor and everything, and they were really smart so they would know what would help. He laughed though at Santana name dropping games like a pro. "Yeah, it's one of my favorites. You play?"

"They are, but I have to be up at 4am to get to Cheerios practice. You're only supposed to take them if you can get 8 hours of sleep. I'd have to go to bed at 8." Santana nodded. "Yeah, I play."

It had been a while since Finn thought about the hours that Cheerios practiced. It's not like had been with Quinn in a long time so it really didn't concern him anymore. But suddenly hearing Santana talk about it made him remember how much he hated how crazy Coach Sylverster was. Though they were really good. Much better than the football team. He still didn't like that Santana didn't seem to get enough sleep because of it though. "Oh. That's right... well maybe after Cheerios season is over you can like, you know, catch up on your sleep." He shrugged then sort of grinned. "Not many girls play. That's cool."

Santana smirked at him. "I'm not like all the other girls."

Finn didn't even know how to respond to that but he found himself kind of staring. He blinked a few times then looked back up at nothing in particular. "Oh."

Santana laughed, a true grin coming over her face and lighting her up. "Yeah." She leaned back against the windshield.

They laid there for a few minutes in silence. It wasn't uncomfortable or anything, which Finn was grateful for, but it kind of took him off guard how easy it was just laying here with her on the hood of his car in the middle of the night. He had been sure after their last totally random and coincidental hang out that they wouldn't ever see each other again. Well not really never see each other again. He had of course seen her around school, and sometimes found himself watching her more than he should during football games when the Cheerios were going through routines. But it was just because he was curious, right? He had seen a totally different Santana that night at Perkins and he still wasn't sure that it had really happened. "Uh, so, what have you been up to?" He asked finally.

"What have I been up to?" Really? That was the best conversation starter he could come up with? What had she been up to? She smirked and looked at him, deciding to play with him a little. "Are you hitting on me, Finn? Was that a pick-up line?"

Finn's eyes went wide with panic. Is that what she thought he was doing? Maybe she had noticed the staring during the football games. He wasn't sure how she could tell where his eyes were looking when he had that big helmet on but he would have to be more careful from now on. Wait, it's not like he was planning to keep staring at her. "What? No, not I'm not hitting on you. I mean that's not even really a pick-up line. If I were going to hit on you I'd ask if you knew karate because your body is kicking or something like that." Wait, what?

Santana had expected his reaction, but not the addition of a really bad pick-up line. She laughed, her shoulders shaking a bit with it. "Are you tired? Because you've been running through my mind all day."

Well that had been unexpected. He had kind of expected Santana to get mad at him or something. He wasn't really sure why, but he had figured she wouldn't appreciate the crappy pick-up line he accidentally blurted out. He hadn't expected her to retaliate with one. He chuckled nervously. "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?"

Santana smirked at him, impressed that he hadn't backed down. "Was that an earthquake or did you just rock my world?" Being Santana Lopez, she had heard all the pick-up lines.

Finn smirked right back and raised an eyebrow. "Here I am, so what are your other two wishes?" Where was all this coming from?

Santana laughed at that one. That was good. As they kept going, she found herself loosening up and forgetting to guard herself. "Do you have a sunburn, or are you always this hot?"

Finn blushed slightly but he definitely wasn't about to back down. "If I could rearrange the alphabet I'd put U and I together," he said, grinning. It was weird that this was... fun.

Santana reached out, brushing her fingertips over the back of his hand. "Your body is a wonderland and I want to be Alice."

Finn's stomach did this weird jumpy thing when he felt Santana touch him but he didn't move away. "My lips are skittles. Want to taste the rainbow?" Was it weird that he sort of actually wanted Santana to kiss him?

Santana leaned in closer, her eyes on his and her voice lowering. "I know I don't have a chance, but I just wanted to hear an angel talk."

Santana's face was sort of really close but he still wasn't about to back down. "If I followed you home, would you keep me?" He asked in a quiet voice while looking her straight in the eyes.

"Depends on what you have to offer," Santana said softly, before pressing her lips to his. Her eyes fluttered closed, her fingers touching his jaw lightly.

Finn had known this was coming, hoping for it even, but still let out a noise of surprise when Santana's lips were finally on his. He kissed her back slowly, keeping it gentle.

Santana teased his lips with the tip of her tongue, keeping it light and easy. There was no need to go fast and scare him.

Finn reached up to brush a few stray pieces of hair that had escaped from Santana's pony tail back then cupped her cheek. This was nice. And unexpected. But nice.

Santana broke the kiss after a moment with a satisfied smile. "Did you like that?" she whispered, her eyes on his face.

His eyes were sort of glazed over, but somehow Finn managed a nod. "Did you?" He asked back after a few moments.

Santana laughed softly and sat back, breaking any body contact. "Hmm, it was alright." She smirked and leaned against the windshield again.

Finn frowned slightly. "Oh." He was obviously disappointed, because really what dude liked to be told that their kissing was just alright? "Well, sorry I guess."

Santana slid off the hood of the car. "Don't be so sensitive." She tossed her now empty water bottle into a nearby trash bin.

"Oh," he repeated. He wasn't sure what else he was supposed to say to that.

Santana gave him a smirky smile. "See you around, Hudson." With that, she turned and jogged back the way she'd come.

Santana was already quite a ways away before Finn realized what was going on. "Yeah... see you..." he said to himself as he watched Santana run away. Did that really just happen?
