Clinic

Three days later, his head's still hurting. He keeps trying to read but his vision swims a little bit. He's had a concussion once before, falling out of a tree as a kid, catching his temple against a knot of root. This si a similar sort of pain. There's an impressive bruise on the side of his face where he must have caught the tree trunk. The ( Read more... )

She marched into the clinic like she belonged there, barely sparing the doctor at the table a glance -- the man who looked very much like Dr. Reid but very clearly wasn't -- on her way toward the patient beds.

She hadn't heard until that morning, and even then, she hadn't been sure whether she could come or not. But Nicki wasn't the type to be timid, not about these sorts of things, and while she hardly knew the boy, he was obviously in need of some sort of supervision.

Her eyes falling to his bruised face, she sighed and said, "What on Earth have you gone and done to yourself?"

It's fucking amazing how it feels to see her; he barely knows her, but there's something about her that exudes 'Mom' and it's ilke a weight goes off his shoulders the minute she walks into the room. Cooper sags back against the pillow and self-conciously covers the bruises with one hand. At least she can't see the bloody bandages under the sheet.

"Uh...dinosaurs," he says, with a crooked smile. "It's okay, though. I'm fine."

"You're not fine. I've got eyes in my head, Cooper Harris, I can see you quite well," she pointed out, reaching for a pitcher of water nearby and pouring him a glass.

"You're lucky you didn't get yourself killed."

"Okay, I'm not fine, but I'm not going to die or anything," he says, shoving himself into a sitting position against the pillow so that he can take the water that he's clearly supposed to drink.

"I had to do something, Nicki. Jesus."

Rachel not very good at being comforting. Or helpful. Or nice, sometimes.

But Rachel has awesome boobs. And Cooper likes boobs. So Rachel and her boobs have dropped by to visit. One wonderbra and one v-neck, white cotton t-shirt later and she's pulling up the chair next to his bed, flipping it around so she can straddle it.

"Hey."

Even banged up and bruised and slightly dazed, Cooper stares. He stares for a full moment before he straightens up, eyes on her face. Mostly, he's just glad to see her in once piece.

"Hey," he says, pushing higher in bed. "How're you doing?"

"Better than you," she comments, glancing at his leg under the covers. "But you know you're gonna have some awesome war wounds. Chicks dig scars."

"You want to see?" asks Cooper, completely unself-concious considering he's wearing nothing but boxers and bloody bandages under the sheet. "It's pretty neat, if you can ignorer how gross it is."

In retrospect, it's much easier for Pepper to acknowledge exactly how lucky they all were. Cooper got the worst of it and he's still very much alive, if temporarily slowed down. The fact that she herself had come out of the experiences with only cuts and bruises is a constant source of amazement.

There aren't any proper vases to be had, so she's stolen a glass and filled it with flowers instead, the least she could do for Cooper under the circumstances. "I hope you're not allergic," she says by way of greeting as she carries them into the clinic and sets them at Cooper's bedside.

"Nobody's ever bought me flowers," says Cooper, blinking a little and, reflexively, covering the bruising on the side of his face with one hand as he straightens up, pushing up against the pillow. He breaks into a reflexive smile, though.

"How're you doing?"

"I'm going to wager that you've also never done battle with a dinosaur before, either," Pepper points out with an arch look over her shoulder as she arranges the flowers to her liking.

"Thank you for that, by the way," she adds when she's finished and settling into the chair next to his bed. "And I'm fine, Cooper, thank you for asking. How's the leg?"

"I had to do something," says Cooper, looking momentarily self conscious, letting his hair slip forward before he pushes it back.

"The scar's going to be pretty awesome," he says, brightening. "You want to see?"
