The right to arm bears

This is a bit of a rant about gun control in the US. It's not particularly well reasoned or anything because, well, it's a rant. I'll actually put out a decent arguement when I'm feeling more reasonable ( Read more... )

I think about that Eddie Izzard quote every time anyone from the NRA opens their stupid mouths.

They have to sit up and take notice of the fact that nowhere else in the developed world even touches America on gun crime. We had one school massacre - up go the gun laws, and we haven't had another one. They just keep sitting there and blaming hard rock music but I don't think singing ever killed anyone either!

There is an Eddie Izzard quote for practically every ocassion I've found.

I always liked what Marriyln Manson said on Bowling for Columbine:- that if he'd ever met the boys, he would have just listened to them.

He also said that Cain killed Abel a long time before he, and others like him, came along with their music.

Both good points I feel.

It's scary that so much of what is being said in the US is about tighter security at universities, anger management classes etc etc. No-one seems to be mentioning gun control.

Ah, Eddie ♥

Yeah, I don't really like his music but I loved him for what he said in that interview. I was actually watching Bowling for Columbine the night before this happened. Freaky coincidence.

The stranglehold the gun lobbies have on American politics is scary. It seems like such a simple connection to make - people being shot? Don't let people buy guns = less people being shot. But it's a connection they aren't willing to have made.

Though it may not seem like it from the outside, there is a large number of Americans who agree 100% with what you say hear. We just don't even get heard in our own country, much less in others. It looks to me like if an 11 year old boy could get his hands on a deadly weapon almost 10 years ago, and gun laws have only become more lax since then, we are very lucky that we haven't already had incidents even more costly than this one.
