New comic page!Mental state is not too improved. Well. My resume is getting looked over by career services at MCAD, so hopefully the updated version will help me get jobs. Got some advice about job hunting, which revealed the fact that I don't know how to dress myself. Who knew! I sure didn't. I'm told I dress like crap on a day to day basis, but I ( Read more... )

And being told that I can't get boys otherwise just pisses me off.

Considering the vast majority of what's in stores just makes girls look like utter tramps... UGH DON'T GET ME STARTED ON CLOTHING

Anyway, being dressed smart doesn't mean you have to go trampy or be uncomfortable. Maybe it's time for a browse of fashion sites for ideas on dressing up a bit? Even though it's super-pretentious and occasionally WTF, I enjoy browsing The Sartorialist ( http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/ ) sometimes, for instance.

Also I tell everyone who met me again post-university that my FASHION UP was due to finishing uni and feeling like I should dress like an adult... but it was also partly visiting Japan. North Americans in general look like trash after you've been over there. D=

Anyway, you just gotta find your own inspiration.

Honestly I just want to dress like a gentleman but when I told said friend this, it was met with skepticism and her affirming that there were other clothes in my comfort range that I just didn't know about. I mean obviously I know I don't dress like a gentlemen now, god, I'm not blind, but if she really wants to dress me up can't we go with the ideal I already have in mind?

Thanks for the suggestion of browsing fashion sites, actually. I get so frustrated shopping that I hadn't even considered that.

--oh man this kid. That kid is amazing.

See now, I say that if you have in mind dressing like a gentleman, then that's what you should go for. Google images for more ideas on that then, too! (As someone who shops in menswear a lot, be prepared for a long search to find stuff that fits... but man, they have amazing shirts.)

Admittedly, I don't know how you dress now, but for me, pretending that t-shirts don't exist was a good starting point.

HNNNGH I know. I don't even like kids that much, but man, that's adorable.

Any person who only likes you when you're cleaned up isn't worth keeping. Fuck that noise and fuck anyone who buys into it. :|

...I wish I could take you shopping around here. I KNOW LOTS OF GOOD STORES FOR DRESSING LIKE A GENTLEMAN. THAT DO NOT COST THE EARTH. My PhD is EATING me and I'm sorry to be so reclusive lately, but I COULD NOT SEE YOU RAGING AND NOT SAY SOMETHING. AND FASHION IS SOMETHING I CAN ALWAYS TALK ABOUT ( ... )

THAT DO NOT COST THE EARTH.

THIS. THIS IS ALSO HELPFUL. Ahahaha I so do not have the funding right now to go revamp my wardrobe completely, gotta take baby steps.

Hmmmm~ I don't plan on leaving the house most days so I will just throw on whatever. XD If I plan on going to a job interview or something I will dress nicely...
So, let's see, the moral here is don't hold back for fear of being overdressed! KICK OF WITH MOMENTUM AND DRESS THE IMPOSSIBLE!

If I wait until pounds/dollars are at a more even exchange rate before coming over for a shopping trip, you'd understand right? |D

AAAAH this computer doesn't have skype on it! I... don't know if it has a mic, even? I have this oooold PC desktop a friend gave me for free, so I can't complain, but it's not my old mac. ;_;

I HAVE SHOWN YOU THE GLORY THAT IS UNI-QLO. MY GOOD DEED FOR THE DAY IS DONE XD

Exactly! I'd say be the KAMINA OF FASHION, but that sounds SO WRONG.

Oh, sure XDDD

THIS IS WHY YOU NEED A HEADSET WITH A MIC. THEN YOU WILL BE FINE.

One thing I remember elvey telling me once is that if you're wearing a skirt, you automatically look more adult/mature/hire-able/not-about-to-start-giggling-over-penis-jokes. Obviously this won't do for your ultimate goal of dressing like a gentleman, but until your budget is more negotiable, I think picking up a single knee-length jean skirt will give you +2 professionalism while still being relatively causal and comfortable.

Collars are also a good start--one or two polo shirts will let you still be as comfortable as in t-shirts, but they look more professional because of the collar.

And as a default, I would say when you're starting on revamping your wardrobe, made the foundation black--you don't want to look like Raven, but a good pair of black slacks are one of the most versatile things you can own, and a shirt that's black or mostly black can get away with being a more casual cut ( ... )

I actually own a few ankle-length skirts, which I enjoy wearing from time to time, especially for job interview things. They're swishy.

I like the rest of your advice too--I don't do fashion much, so it's nice to have somebody tell me what clothing I could aim for and whyThis friend is... you know, she just wants to help, I think she has the impression that I'm not happy with how I look which is why I dress like a boy. I'm actually quite happy with myself and being female, I'm just not happy with society's expectations of me as a female (see: trampy girls clothing) and so I want sexy boy clothes. And the friend isn't pushing trampy girls clothes, she has better taste than that, but I still don't want the ideal she's leaning toward ( ... )
