Today, Roxey held her ground against a charging rooster. Keep in mind, that she has never, ever seen a chicken before in all her (almost) 10 years. I am so proud. LOL Suburbia grows wilder everyday. We are living on the frontier! Of something ( Read more... )

I hope it was a rooster from somebody interested in backyard chickens, and not one from illegal cock fighters.

Chandler's encounters with large birds have been...interesting. He alerts to turkey vultures perched in the neighborhood. He charged a momma turkey and nine chicks, scattering them across five different yards. Then there were the two guineas that fluttered into the round pen during his second sheepherding clinic. He was very good and stayed where I told him while they rounded up the birds; terrorizing the farm's birds would have been rude! He likes to chase mallards, but only swam far out the first time (learned his lesson!), and he's also attempted to chase a redtail hawk out of the yard.

Oh, he was a sassy, glossy, well fed specimen. I seriously doubt he's a fighter. Several of the Hispanic families in the neighborhood keep chickens, even though it's against code since they're classed as livestock. Code enforcement will come by, the chickens will disappear for a month or so, and then they're back. Rinse, repeat. None of them have ever gotten free before, however, and I've never even seen them in their well-tucked-away enclosures, but they're pretty easy to hear while wandering the neighborhood.

What, no pictures? ;)

Ahh, but that's exactly what I miss about suburbia, although ours features foxes and skunks. And an entire family of raccoons up in a tree!

When I was a child, there were lots of raccoons and opossums around. There used to be an absolutely massive albino opossum that would come up on porches and peer in doors and windows. I initially thought it was a white cat (and it probably was looking for cat food, ha!) until I saw the naked tail. Horribly traumatized me because I knew then that it must be the world's largest white rat! LOL ( ... )

Wow, opossums! And an albino one too! Yeah, the only ones we have of those are at the zoo... ;)

Thanks for the entertaining accounts :) I suspect we could both go on-and-on with tales of critters prowling about our respective 'hoods, but I'll leave you with just the following: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scorchez/423088545/in/pool-scarborough_photo

Hehehe. I must say I've wondered who would win in the Cat vs. Rooster faceoff. Now I know!
