I love people who write--and seriously think!--that Jane Austen wrote romance novels. She never wrote romance in her life!!! She wrote vicious, bitter, evil social satire--acid rather than ink dripped from her quill. Stop perceiving her and her language as romance--start perceiving it as the best satire on British society until the appearance of Thackeray a generation, or Wodehouse two generations later. Then you might begin to understand her.
