So imagine that vampires actually exist, and the Earth gets invaded by aliens. Intriguing premise, right?

If done well (or done in a really good silly style, not an accidental one) that'd be SO AWESOME.

But this doesn't sound like that.

For a really good alien invasion + vampires story, check out Blindsight, by Peter Watts. Terrific hard sci-fi take on vampires, the Fermi Paradox, the nature of intelligence and consciousness. Seriously, this book is stuffed with enough cool ideas to make half a dozen novels. And the ending is so creepy-awesome. This book messed up my head, and I mean that in the best possible way.

Actually, now that I think about it, I may have first heard about this book on your LJ before, or maybe on SF_With_Bite. So if I'm telling you stuff you already know, sorry.

I don't actually remember hearing about that one, but it sounds interesting, so I've added it to my TBR list. Thanks! (Like my TBR list needs to be any longer...)

It can be read for free online at Watts' website, with expanded notes at the end, and a great little slideshow presentation that has to do with the backstory. As with all Watts it's pretty grim and rough, but it's compelling stuff.

-a fan of the novel

if you think about it....it is possible that a multi-stellar civilization really would get so bogged down in sophisticated bureaucracy that its officers and officials and grunts would not do spectacularly well against a hinterland like Earth. that is certainly the case of the redcoats against America. possibly even america in Afghanistan.
