I quite like The Sign of Four. Although it does suffer a bit from the Long Story Problem of too much set-up/back-story and not enough Holmes & Watson, it's to no-where near the same degree as The Valley of Fear or A Study In Scarlet (which at least has the whole introductory thing going for it). The boat-chase at the end is pretty damned good too.

I thought appreciation of the boat chase was just me - I love depictions of the Thames as a working environment and Conan Doyle captured that exceptionally well.
