71. Surface Detail by Iain M Banks

The latest Culture novel. It's huge. I spent two whole weeks reading nothing but this book - it frequently takes me longer than that to read books. Gargh, I hated "The Birthing House". Hate, hate, hate. Terrible book. Also, weirdly, about the only debut novel by a horror author, written for adults, that's had major supermarket distribution for about a decade. WHY WHY WHY!

I had to review The Birthing House for SFX. I didn't give it a good review.

If you like kids' books, I really enjoyed The Dead of Winter by Christopher Priestly. It's like MR James meets Dickens to write for children.
