Ficmix: Nothing Like You and I

Jul 17, 2007 22:08

And I procrastinate by compiling a fanmix once again!  It's all good. This time, a new kind of fanmix: a Ficmix! The songs tell the story of the reunion of the Doctor and Rose, based on the 3,098,343 fics out there that do so in far more detail. Under the lyrics there is a brief summary of each point of the plot, which is sort of a fic and sort of not.

Prologue: Crying My Heart Out for You || Ella Fitzgerald

All my dreams are over, now I’m wide awake
With a lonesome feeling and a constant ache
Livin’ with my memories just for old times sake
Crying my heart out for you.

I was just a scholar, made for you to teach
Searching for a true love, one I couldn’t reach
Now I’m just a pebble on a lonely beach
Crying my heart out for you.

Rose had never known such grief, not even when her father died in front of her.

The Doctor wouldn’t cry more than a tear. He hadn’t grieved for companions before and didn’t know how.

Chapter One: Living On and Wishing Hard

01. Girl in the War || Josh Ritter

Paul said to Peter you got to rock yourself a little harder
Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire
But I got a girl in the war, Paul, the only thing I know to do
Is turn up the music and pray that she makes it through.

Because the keys to the Kingdom got locked inside the King
And the angels fly around in there but we can't see them
I got a girl in the war Paul I know that they can here me yell
If they can't find a way to help her they can go to hell.

He finds somebody else to travel with, because that was what he does.

He’d give anything to see how Rose is doing.

02. In Terms of Love || SheDaisy

I don't think about black in terms of gray

Or revelations in the light of day

I don't think about cold in terms of ice

Or second chances happenin' twice.

I don't think about me in terms of you

I don't think about you in terms of us

I don't think about us in terms of love

I don't think about then in terms of now

I've found a way to start again somehow

I don't think about what we thought it was

Oh, in terms of love.

Rose pushes down the memories, because there was nothing good she could do with them. The important thing, she reasons, is to have her own life. She’s been defining herself in other terms for too long, to be the Girl Who Traveled With the Doctor instead of being Rose Tyler. It’s the only way to be.

She’s always cold.

03. This Side || Nickel Creek

One day you'll see her and you'll know what I mean.

Take her or leave her, she will still be the same.

She'll not try to buy you with her time.

Nothing's the same as you will see when she's gone.

It's foreign on this side.

And I'll not leave my home again.

There's no place to hide,

And I'm nothin' but scared.

He lives in memories: they are beautiful and golden.

Outside, he can’t hide from the darkness of a universe without her in it. He doesn’t venture far from the little he has.

Martha knows she is second best, but she doesn’t leave.

04. Summerbreeze || Emiliana Torrini

Summerbreeze is blowin' through your window

and summerbreeze is blowin' through your hair

and something in your eyes

that you cannot disguise

don't tell me it ain't there.

Might have been a while

since you've been loved

by one who really loves you.

Rose is aware he’s probably picked up a new companion by now.

She hopes he hasn’t forgotten her.

She’s sure that nobody else’s hand fits his like hers does.

Chapter Two: It’s So Good to See You Again

05. Across the Ocean || Azure Ray

Now I've traveled across the ocean
with the same shoes just longer hair
still carry that picture in my wallet
from the photo booth
yeah it's still there

Just give me some kind of sign
is this the right place or the right time?
is this the right time?

Rose can’t let go. She keeps the tiny photograph of him that was in her pocket and she keeps the shoes that she found in the TARDIS wardrobe.

She thinks there must be a reason, because if she can’t walk forward maybe it’s because someone is holding her back.

A sign would be nice.

06. Ocean-Size Love || Leigh Nash

It's the same whatever side you're on
Separated we are delicate and small
And the space between, needs our attention
I see you right in front of me, as close as you can get
And I pray that you won't leave, this daydream yet

And it might seem much too far, to get back to where you are
But it's close enough, with an ocean size love
So if you can't reach out to me, send a sign across the sea
And I'll pick it up, with an ocean size love.

It’s like every daydream they’ve ever had, only this time it’s realer than the sand their feet are marking. They stand at the cracks in the universe and peer through. The distance is farther than any distance ever measured, but it feels like nothing at all.

He can finally say the words he couldn’t say before.

07. Set Fire to the Third Bar || Martha Wainwright and Snow Patrol

I'm miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms

After I have traveled so far
We'd set the fire to the third bar
We'd share each other like an island
Until exhausted, close our eyelids.

When he finally stands before her, a specter of the dusk, she can’t look away from his eyes, and his gaze never leaves her face.

And when their gaze finally breaks, it is morning, a new day.

08. Waste Another Day || Brooke Fraser

We could speak 'til nothing's left unspoken
We could drive 'til we've run out of road
We could drink 'til we've emptied the ocean
But I'd be happy here
Happy just to hold you.

'Til the suns and planets disappear
I could stay in your arms all year
Even if that means infinity through
If being productive is being with you
Then baby I don't want to waste another day.

She’s content just to be with him, but he’s bouncing- literally bouncing. So they go out and run, because there is nothing in their way.

It’s a good way to spend a day, or forever.

Chapter Three: Happily Ever After

09. Blush (Only You) || Plumb

I wanna be in love with only you
I wanna watch the sky turn grey then blue
I wanna know the kiss that’s always new
I wanna be in love with only you.

When stars are falling dark
we’ll light the way
we’ll hit the ground and fall
into the shade
we’ll light the night with fire
and run away.

He’s only been back three days, and Rose has not stopped grinning the whole time.

Jackie’s relieved to see that Rose remembers how.

Mickey’s tells himself he’s glad he’s not in love with Rose anymore, or he might be jealous.

Rose doesn’t notice them.

10. The Starlit Hour || Ella Fitzgerald

Love, here in the starlit hour
Night whispering lullabies
Let me dream forever
Underneath the silvery skies.

Will it be just as sweet again,
The glamour, the glory that we know
Will I find when we meet again
The glamour, the glory’s still a glow.

The whole world slows down for the two of them, as they lie on his coat on a distant planet and watch the stars wheel above. Rose asks if everything can be the same as it ever was.

The Doctor says he couldn’t look at something that never changes; it’s wrong.

Rose doesn’t reply.

11. Saving the World || Brooke Fraser

We could stay another day in this apathy
Let it permeate us 'til we're numb through

And while we're waiting, we could try saving the world
Or are we storing that up for a rainy day?
I'm anticipating the time when it'll be my turn
It could be fun to try
I think I'll save the world.

Flames shoot towards the sky and they’re running towards the explosion everyone else is fleeing. His hand is tight around hers and she grins, because saving the world with him is better than anything.

Epilogue: Nothing Like You and I || The Perishers

We spent some time
together walking
Spent some time just talking
about who we were
You held my hand so
very tightly
And told me what we
could be dreaming of

There’s nothing like you and I.

He never stops running, and it’s getting to be time for him to move on. “You could come with me, you know,” he tells her, holding her hand so tightly.

“I have a life now, family, responsibilities,” she reminds him. “I can’t just leave.” A smile plays at her lips.

He knows what she wants him to say. “Did I mention it also travels in time?” His eyebrows waggle invitingly. “So, what do you say?”

She gives him her answer.

He cups her cheek in his palm, and she leans into it. “There’s nothing like you and I, Rose Tyler.”
