The Coachella Report, 2006

DAY ONE
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah sounds (and looks) better in the album
Animal Collective Mikey: "tang ina parang di mo naiintindihan kung ano ang pinagagawa nila pero ang astig no?"
Kanye West was obviously having a tough time with the crowd but all is forgiven after hearing him perform "Heard 'Em Say"
Imogen Heap does everything by herself(!), looks like Delirium (complete with butterflies), has the most unintelligible spiels ever, and is amazing.
Sigur Ros Matthew Fox once said that they have the most intensely spiritual sets. they do. Lille started crying, and i almost did 'til Anette pointed out that Thor Birgisson looked like Redford White.

Cat Power, the last time I'd seen her, was this shy awkward girl with bangs over her face who didn't have the patience for either a band or a complete song. she'd mumble through her lyrics and stop midset, making mistakes and telling everyone how displeased she was with her songs. i loved her last two albums, so i was willing to go through all this again and skip Franz Ferdinand altogether. i didn't regret it one bit. suddenly Chan Marshall was the most charming and beautiful artist; dancing, making faces and flexing her muscles while the Memphis Rhythm Band backed her up perfectly. she was the best thing about day one, and everyone who reads this should try to get ahold of her beautiful new album "The Greatest"

Depeche Mode had Mikey and me screaming "Somebody naman diyan o! I Just Can't Get Enough!" much to the dismay of their hardcore fans.
The Rakes said "fuck Madonna" and "Depeche Mode is old. and rubbish." i love them.
She Wants Revenge is trying to outJoy Division Interpol, except both Joy Division and Interpol are good.
Daft Punk were too full, which was ok because i think i'd puke if i heard "One More Time" one more time, even if it would have been performed by the originals

DAY TWO
Mates of State have never lost it, and are just getting more and more charming as they go along
Los Amigos Invisibles fantastico
Phoenix rocksso much live, which isn't apparent in their albums. "If I Ever Feel Better" is even better live.
Metric has a cute vocalist
Minus The Bear is one of the tightest live acts i've ever seen. Pachuca Sunrise made my day
Bloc Party i did not see at all. a major, painful sacrifice made so that i could once again see
Sleater-Kinney, one of my favorite bands OAT. disappointing that almost all the songs on their set were from "The Woods", an album i didn't really like, but when they did "Get Up" tears welled up in my eyes, which is the weirdest response to a Riot Grrrl song.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs has a great new album which is even better live and it's nice to see that Karen O still eats the mic during "Art Star"
Editors sounds like Joy Division and Interpol. and are good.
Mogwai, the last time I missed them i promised that I'd do my best to watch them the next opportunity I got. they were on during the Madonna and Massive Attack sets, but I saw them anyway. for, like, 3 seconds.
Madonna was smaller, in my eyes, than the top segment of my pinky. she was so small that the video wall was tiny. even though she didn't do "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" as i'd hoped, i heard her say "George fucking Bush" and "Motherfuckerssss!" so all was worth it. it was her "first festival", she said, and it was probably the first time in the festival that someone brought dancers.
The Go! Team are BRITISH!?! but they're one of the most American bands I know!
Massive Attack was the best thing about Coachella. Daddy G returns, and hearing Risingson as it should be played gave me goosebumps. Horace Andy was there as well, which was a welcome surprise, and he didn't do too many of his songs, which was even better. his version of Angel was spectacular, but hearing Elizabeth Fraser go onstage and perform Teardrop was incomparable.
Tool has so many fucking fans! more people went to their set than i've seen people go to Madonna, the Pixies, Radiohead and the Cure. There were easily twice as many people in Tool's set as there were in Depeche Mode's. and a weird selection to boot; from 60s hippies to Goth kids to people dancing Ballet to their music to midgets in Viking suits. very strange for a band who hardly has radio airplay and releases an album like every 5 years. fantastic performance, though. and Maynard Keenan is hate.

not my pictures. mostly from spin.com and rawkblog.blogspot

oh! and this is for Niña... a small thrill for me because Spin Magazine was my bible as a teenager where I discovered most of the bands that changed my life.

Coachella isn't Coachella without the scorching heat, the litter, the people in shocking outfits, the suffocating crowds and, of course, the people who trudge through it all with you. it was a joy watching people scream 'thief!' at you while you stole the editors and magic numbers posters, catching up late at night in what your co-workers called "Filipino English accents" before sleeping on your floor, inching our way through the madding crowds to get closer to the stage, having conversations with you while my face was scrunched up against the stinky person in front of me and your feet were no longer touchng the ground and debating about whether we missed Miles St. or not. it was hell. can't wait to do it again.

extra plug: BLAST OPLE! May 9 eve at Gweilo's for 4AD night! alavet!

muzak, coachella
