I received my first hacking lesson. I had no idea how ridiculously easy it is to see what people are IMing on nearby networks. It's really scary. Also, if you aren't using SSL for email, watch out. People can see that too using free, easy to use software. Do you have Comcast? HOLY SHIT. Talk about ridiculous. Everything happening in nearby homes is coming into your home. Everything you do in your home is going into nearby homes. You better believe it baby. If you hook up a computer in between the wall and your cable modem, you can see all the traffic in nearby homes. To me this is shocking. If one accesses Google Mail by going to https://mail.google.com/ rather than just http://mail.google.com/ (not the "s"), the session stays SSL-encrypted the whole time, not just for the login

Thanks for the GMail tip. That's great. I wonder if iChat can do SSL. Hmm. Cotse? Sounds a little familiar if you know what i mean. That's a really unusual name for anything after the fame of gotse.
Not a problem. I use the Gmail thing all the time, even though mail in transit to other providers or to non-SSL using Gmail users isn't encrypted, it still prevents (or lowers the probability) of snooping locally.
Yeah, the cotse thing has an unfortunate name, but it stands for "Church of the Swimming Elephant", which is some inside joke with the site founders. They have the backstory for it on their site somewhere. Still, the service is most excellent. I like being able to give out timed expiring addresses (something like 05012007@[domain].cotse.net) to various companies, and when that date rolls around, they delete all incoming mail. Useful for giving to possibly-not-quite-upstanding websites.
Remember that I worked for a network analysis software company? We tested our sniffer tools on our own network. So everyone was aware to secure their shit or think about what they say since it's all plaintext.
