I rather enjoyed this myself, but you know that. Interesting note about Ruthie's character, because it suddenly made a LOT OF SENSE when it was revealed, given how she interacted with men. I'm not saying I saw it coming, but it shifted my perspective into something I liked a lot better and appreciated more, if that makes sense. :)
I was completely in the dark about Ruthie, which is what made the reveal in her character so jarring to me. I may have been a little hasty saying it felt shoe-horned into the story, because I'm sure if I re-read the story I would see the hints you just mentioned. Guess I'll have to re-read it sometime and find out. ;D
I'm not sure if I found hints so much as there is a certain stereotype of transgendered people being in brothels, so the reveal did jar me out of the story so much as make me blink and go, "Oh, okay, she's going there." And the fact I got to know Ruthie as she presented herself to the world really helped: her secret wasn't shoved in my face from the get-go, you know?
