I wasn't thrilled with this installment either. I was so disappointed that had I not already OWNED books three and four, I would've seriously reconsidered my commitment to the series. Like you, it was hefty for all the wrong reasons, and it wasn't just the page count. And no, nothing happened, nothing much. It was like pulling teeth compared to the first book.
I decided to bite the bullet last week and start A Storm of Swords, and I'm a hundred pages from the end, roughly. A much, much more exciting read. Thank goodness commenters to Clash of Kings convinced me my time would be well spent!
I didn't feel like it was pulling teeth (I managed to read it in about 6-7 days actually, which isn't bad, considering the length) but it was still not nearly as exciting as GoT. :( Thank goodness Storm of Swords really picks up (though it took me foreveerrr to read, just because it's so frikken long!!!) Wait until you get to the very end!! It's so sooo good. My jaw was hanging open for quite a bit of it.
Yeah, I'm kind of confused as to why it took me so long to read it, seeing as I liked it quite a bit more than CoK. I've also been really busy these past couple of weeks, so I was probably just distracted. Either way, I don't think I mind taking so long, as this was *really* good and prolonging the reading experience wasn't bad. It's just my towering TBR that makes me feel guilty when I take awhile reading a book, ahaha.
