A shift over time?

Hello everyone. I'll try to be brief and add info as needed.  I've tested INFJ for several years on the MBTI.  The T was never more than about 10 points below the F, but I was still INFJ.  This past year, that gap began closing, then switched.  Sporadically at first, but when I took the test a few days ago, the T was leading the J by a rather ( Read more... )

type changes, t-f, infj

I've switched in the opposite way (INTJ to INFJ) in recent years. It's too complicated to discuss right now because I'm tired, but I'd be happy to talk with you about it later if you want to.

*laugh* Okay, I'm not the only one going flippity-floppity. That's good to know. It means there's other information to have and I may not have it yet.

Yes, I'd love to talk to you about this.

Cool. Okay- the way I feel now is that I'm INTJ (Fi Te) in work and school situations, and an INFJ (Fe Ti) in most other situations. I'm high on both T and F- T won out on tests in the past, and now F wins out. It may be because I'm better able to recognize the F side, and it may be because I use the F side more than I used to. It's probably both. I think that's it in a nutshell.

Others have said, which makes a lot of sense, that each letter is a preference, and people can be flexible between using different abilities and ways of approaching situations. I think we are probably both flexible regarding using T and F functions, and maybe one was preferred in the past (or in the majority of situations) and now the other is preferred. '

What do you think?

I don't believe anyone is truly fixed.

It's a matter of will or duress, both of which can give you the ability to either switch permanently, or, become a flip-floppy 'X'. I can flip-flop on the E/I and the T/F poles.

I've been an INTJ for years and years. I had the same thing happen. Sporadically at first, and now it's INFJ everytime.

Not sure much about that pole, but last time I tested INTP (by a mere 2 points on the P). I think it's because I'm getting to know and accept myself better.

In some ways, I wouldn't be surprised if I was becoming more F...it comes with the field I'm entering. But my T hubby will probably help keep me grounded in my T.

One thing to note about the various tests is that they aren't so much tests as indicators. A better way to figure out your type is to read all the type descriptions and decide which one fits you best. Since Myers-Briggs is a self-reporting system, this shouldn't be regarded as cheating. It's likely that any given person will have different answers from day to day anyway. The point of the test is to narrow your options are so you don't have to read all sixteen profiles.

Also, as a note, some people do test weirdly. NTs, for example, can often test as S because a lot of the N/S questions focus on the sensible vs. the ideal - and the NT is the Rational type.

Anyway, the point is, read the profiles and don't worry too much about particular test results.

Those are some good points to consider. Thanks!
