They had told him, what had happened to Finn. When Shahar went back to Vae, after what had happened to both Darien and Finn, he had been told. He had not thought to see either of them ever again-

The battle had ended, somehow he had survived, and now he thought the only thing left to do was go home to Vae so they could both mourn, together. Then Owein's Horn sounded across the field, and the Wild Hunt was summoned.
Shahar knew- he knew to fear them. He had heard what had happened at Celidon, and now there would be No One to stop them- But even that knowledge could not make him stand there, eyes to the sky, hoping for one last glimpse of Finn. Of his son

Paul sees, by looking at her, that she cannot answer - so it seems to fall to him.
Always the hard truths. But this one is not hard, not entirely, and his voice is full of compassion, as he says, "He too did everything right, Finn. Everything. He is gone, but he killed Rakoth Maugrim before he died."
Finn feels a strangely mild surprise. He knew Dari would choose right, but to hear it fills him with pride and a deep grief (if he left, Dari wouldn’t be dead).
(If he had waited, had found-someone, he knows there was someone he was supposed to ask-his little brother might have survived.)
A peace fills him, though, and the emotions and pain start to drift into the distance as if someone else is experiencing them, yards away. "Oh, little one," he says.
His voice sounds weak and far-away he notes, absently, as if it is important. Strange and cracked, almost as if it does not belong to him at all. Things have grown fuzzier, as he speaks, but now they are blurring into black.
