Close Encounters of the Absurd Kind

Feb 02, 2016 14:38

The sky opened up today, dumping a heavenly residue over a significant portion of the central US.  Aaaaand now we have snow days all around, across affected regions.  It’s not exactly blizzard conditions.  Even so, lotsa folks abandon job posts in favor of cabin fever at times like this, causing business shutdowns all over for the duration of this ( Read more... )

This is another wonderful entry, from the opening rant through the appalling events to the (mostly) satisfying conclusion. I always look forward to your entries!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Was beginning to think I'd showed up to the party without my deodorant. ;)

This is a masterfully told tale that trumps all other alien encounters! ;)

Thanks very much! Although, I don't suppose I have any alien tales. Unless you count illegal aliens. I've encountered plenty of those. ;)

also now friending you because you're always nice when you comment, so thanks!

What a terrific man Hector sounds like. So sad the way he was treated.

You know, he really is an amazing human being. And I won't disagree that was a terrible night for him, but, something good came out of it, something that benefits mankind on a much greater scale, to some degree. Hector considers that a win.

Such a winding story! Very interesting to see the path this took. My husband occasionally watches the "Ancient Aliens" type stuff, mostly to mock it, and I've always found them hilarious :)

Yeah. I didn't mean for it to be so all over the map, but my friend, while chatting about the craziness on TV, said his dog is obsessed with shows about Bigfoot. His DOG. And, of course, I can't think about Bigfoot without telling people about Hector. So that's how one lead into the other. Being a lifelong journaler, rather than a writer, does tend to lead one to some stream of conscious flow of thoughts. But I hope folks enjoy the ride, at least.

I could see that these shows might have a certain MST3K type usefulness to them, but you're much more patient than I to be able to sit through one.

The first half of this put me in a o_O state, partly because I was not aware of Neal deGrasse Tyson's rap battle with a genuine flat-earther. And expecting to notice a curve over 16 miles is like expecting to notice one on a golf ball over the surface area touched by a pin. I do admire Neal's vest in that photo, though, and now I kind of want to see that bizarre Bill Nye & Schwarzenegger show.

Hector sounds like a truly amazing person, as gracious in soul as he is accomplished in intellect. The fallout from his attack seems to have wrought a miracle on the perpetrators, thanks to the Ranger's diligence and insistence and also to the families who were appalled by the boys' behavior rather than auto-denying it (so common these days). Getting to know him was a gift to the people in that community, and repenting of harming him was a gift to most of those wayward boys.

A truly inspiring story.

Oh, I totally want one of those NDT vests! There are actually any more examples out there of Bill Nye being mad as a hornet, I was disappointed I had to go with one in which he's just playing the part of morose and depressed, but almost all the links I found that showed off his righteous indignation were from right wing conservative pundit types, which I just couldn't bring myself to promote ( ... )
