And why does that entire movie (even the part where he's running and it's supposed to be funny) make me sob uncontrollably?

Oh, I totally agree with you, that movie makes me cry at several different scenes. Have you seen The Shawshank Redemption...that's another movie that makes me weep uncontrollably.
