Excellent essay. It ties together the two main things I have found frustrating in most of the people I am surrounded by: 1) over-consumption, not just of material but also of abstractions like information and style and fashion, 2) lack of deep intimate connection to anything. It seems like everyone is wrapping themselves up in layers and layers of whatever "unique" crap they can find, then exclaiming: "Look at me!!!" But then they are so smothered in shit that they have no connection whatsoever to the people and things in their lives. It is like they are robots with no spirit inside them. I wonder if the trendy obsession with robots is related to this.
hey, watch it there, I've been ORG (original robot gangsta) for awhile now... ever since i stole my older cousin's "we are the robots" casette tape out of his car... or maybe it was that first Transformer... damn you Optimus Prime!
The robot thing is something I've been thinking about for a while. I am pretty sure now that robot obsession is not healthy and stems from how we see ourselves in today's modern world. We don't need any more robot people. We need to wake up.
Don't get me wrong, I was into Kraftwerk and Devo, and still have a crapload of Transformers back in LV.
