 this may seem supremely stupid and uneducated, but...

can't they put some sort of screen in front of the engines on a plane?  like the screens you put on your windows to keep out bugs, but a little larger and stronger, for birds?

or is that an entirely impossible idea?

I wondered that too. I'm guessing maybe it's something to do with the suction? Those big engines pull in a lot of air. Maybe even with a screen a goose could still cause the engine to go? Hmmm. Must look into this!
