So, this is just my little list of basic coding for my own future reference! (Also something of a guinea pig for me to keep poking at until I get it right!)
Aha. XD; You should only keep the quotations inside the > thingies when it's in the "comment" field for the icon list; in an entry, you can do without, it works better.
also, today we shall learn to do A LJ-CUT~ ta-dam~ ^___^
the easy one:
blahblah start of the entry, if you want any (lj-cut) blahblah that you want to hide behind the parenthesis-like link, like spoilers, big pictures, huge walls of text and the like (/lj-cut) blahblah rest of the entry, if there is any. (if there isn't any you can get rid of the closing tag, it works anyway.)
The link will automatically say ("Read more..."). If you want the link to say more, it's :
(lj-cut text="stuff that you want your link to say, like PORN HERE or image-heavy or stuff. yes, the " thingers are necessary this time") blahblah that you want to hide behind the parenthesis-like linkthing (/lj-cut)
Basic HTML tags also work, like (i)italics(/i), (b)bold(/b), (u)underline(u), (s)strikethrough(/s), and if like me you can never remember the code for resizing text, there's always (

What!? Oh no no no no, do not be sorry! Please! DO NOT BE SORRY!!! O__O Honestly, you have just given me so much help you do not even begin to realize! I actually spent 45 minutes last night searching for a community or a help page or something inside LJ itself that would tell me how to do exactly these little basic things. And then I wake up this morning, and I find this!!! I swear I literally bounced up and down for a few minutes with pure GLEE before giving the LJ-cut a quick try and running off to class. So please! Do not be sorry! o____o

I'll say the same thing here as I said to askerian: if I was any good at fandom-y things, I'd offer to write or draw you something in return. As it is...
Hee, thank you! XD askerian explained that above, too. I've just been too much of a coward to actually try it out yet! #^_^#;;; I promise that I will eventually, though!
...omg. 0__0 I actually did it! Thank you! *glees and glomps!*
(...also, I finally realized just what you were talking about with the '<>' = &-#-60-;/&-#-62-;, and that is a nifty little trick! ^_^;;; Thanks for passing it on! *adds to post too!*)

And I have no clue why your "lj user" tag doesn't work, it looks correct from here. O_o Maybe the layout... huh.
