A snapshot of now

It's moderately lazy Sunday here.

I'm rereading the Sherlock Holmes books, all in one handy volume. Then I'm going to tackle some of the later takes on Doyle's characters.  I've got the latest Mary Russell book to pick up and one of Michael Kurland's anthologies.  Then there is Jeremy Brett. I don't know either, it all just came over me.

I need to ( Read more... )

If I don't have access to a big flat space to run around on - which is most of Pittsburgh - then I generally jump rope. Lately I've been using the rowing machines at the gym instead, but I really should just dig out the rope and spend 20 minutes on the front porch.

Ooh, you must be more coordinated than me. It's embarrassing, especially for a dancer, but I cannot jump rope to save my life. Although I haven't attempted it in quite a few years. Maybe I should give it another try.

It's something that's easy enough to pick up - I won't lie, I've gotten some pretty good self-induced whacks in due to clumsiness. But the more I do it, the less frequent they are.

So maybe I just give it a try where no one can see me at first? *g*

I have had acupuncture several times over the years (and although I can only speak for myself) it has always been completely painless. However, for what you want, I think massage would be much more helpful. Having massage therapy has tremendously reduced my shoulder pain and totally gotten rid of my back pain. I'm not a touchy feely person and for a long time had really disliked being touched, so I thought I would hate going to a massage therapist, but I actually found it really beneficial ( ... )

I'm not worried about the pain, it's more that I have a bit of a needle phobia. However, I agree with you and think massage would be more useful in this situation. My tension is so bad that it throws off my balance, I wake up with shoulder pain, and every time I do push ups my shoulders crack. I can't seem to make a dent in it with yoga or stretching so massage seems a logical next step ( ... )

I couldn't jump rope well as a kid, either. When I tried again as an adult, it took me several months (not weeks) to get the hang of it. Despite being a former gymnast, I'm also a huge klutz, and always have been. In addition to getting my feet caught in a jump rope, I also manage to do myself in with other seemingly harmless objects, including walking into doorframes and cabinets that really seem to have moved but in fact have always been there... ;-) So don't give up on the rope if you don't get it the first day...

How long have you been fencing? Did any of your dance skills carry over? Or was it like starting from scratch?

It must be a gymnast/dancer things, because I've seen quite a few dancers (myself included) tripping over their feet and walking into things. ;)

Well, I started fencing as a teenager and did it for 3 or 4 years. Then I took it up again in my twenties and have been doing it this time around for about 4 or five months.
