Evening guys! I haven't gotten around to making my icon post just yet, but I have been asked about certain colourings and techniques, so I decided to write up a tut and I decided to throw on a bonus one as well.

Made in PS7. Uses curves (optional), No selective colour, likely translatable.
This tutorial is generally best for very dark pictures and is rather simple. Duplicate your base twice and set them both to screen, 100% Percentage will vary depending on base.
If your picture has some strong yellow/red colour to it, take a colour balance layer to fix this using the midtones.
Mine settings looked like this:
Midtones:
-12, 0, +13
Whatever works for your base, you may not even need it.
Now, make a new adjustment layer, gradient map. Select the one that will make your picture black and white and set it to soft light. If your base was very dark to begin with, chances are, it might darken the background more than you like. Adjust the opacity to compensate.
You can also make the optional curves layer if needed to help bring out the picture more.
Mine looked like:
RGB:
Point one:
Input: 196
Output: 208
Point two:
Input: 27
Output: 36
Make one more adjustment layer, brightness/constrast.
Brightness: +17
Contrast: +8
And you're basically done!
Now add whatever text, brushes, textures that you like. I used
this light texture by
briarrose_icons resized it a little and set to screen 100%
If you want some extra colour to it, you can also add these two colour fill layers BELOW the gradient map layer.
Exclusion - 050030 - 100%
Colour Burn - EBEBEB - 100%

Next is a really easy and simple colouring tutorial in just a few steps.

Made with PS7, no selective colour. Easily translatable.
Make all preparations, etc. That should be obvious by now.
This one tends to work well with bluish tinted skin in pictures. Although desaturating the soft light duplicate might make the icon look better if the skin has a lot of colour in it.
Duplicate your base twice. Set the first to screen 100% and the second to soft light 100%
Now for some colour fills.
Exclusion - 00102A - 100%
Colour Burn - E7E7E7 - 100%
Now duplicate the colour burn first so it's on top of the icon and set it to 50% then duplicate the exclusion, drag it to the top and set it to difference instead of exclusion, 81% Adjust opacities as needed.
Drag your soft light layer to the top and that's all! Add anything else you like.

I forgot to add, that if you want to use any of the icons in my tuts, you may as long as you credit me.
