Video 09 → Ken, On Dreams

[Ken's set the Dreamberry up against a book; he's slumped opposite it, chin resting on one wrist. The picture is slightly crooked, and he reaches out to steady the screen.

[Then he glares at it, as if it personally has done him some grave disservice.]

So, these dream... post things. What right have we got to be seeing this stuff?

[Ariadne's frowning when she calls him.]

So I guess this place doesn't differentiate between showing off the dreams that others are allowed to see and those they aren't.

No. It's just... it's random. And a lot of people don't like it.

I don't blame them.

Do we know how it records them in the first place?

I don't think anybody knows anything much about how it happens. [Or they're not telling me if they do.] Just that it does.

[He hesitates, looking uncertain.]

We really shouldn't be watching them, right?

Oh, uh... hi, Omi.

[Except 'Hi, Omi' doesn't really cut it.]

I... well, I was just thinking.

You're right... It isn't something people have a right to.

[He looks down, feeling a bit guilty in his own right now Ken's pointed it out. Guilty and uncomfortable because while the reasoning makes sense... He can't really say he intends to stop watching them. They contain valuable information sometimes.]

No. It isn't.

[And that's all she wrote. If there were subtleties there Ken missed them: he's too busy dealing with his own feelings of guilt to really notice what Omi's deal is. If he's uncomfortable, it just seems right. It's an uncomfortable thing to be.]

I didn't watch Hatori's. You know, that doctor... and he was glad. And if not doing it makes people happy... Well, It's not like I like it when everyone sees mine, is it? What the Hell right have I got to not like other people doing something when I'm doing it right back?

Oh, uh... Not really. I just... I guess I got to thinking?

[That may be why he doesn't do it much.]

Must've been thinking pretty hard, then. It sounded like something upset you-aside from the obvious, anyway.

[... Well. He's used to poking his nose into everyone's business, since it kind of came with his job and he never really had something called a 'social life' to teach him that you don't really do that outside of said job.]

Anything in particular that sparked this, or...?

[Ken, fortunately, is easily tactless enough himself that the occasional display of tactlessness in others simply doesn't register with him. He'd ask, so why not answer?]

Just this guy had a dream. I... well, I'm pretty sure I talked to him a while back when he saw one of mine and I said if he had a dream I wouldn't watch it. I think. So I told him I didn't watch it and he...

Well. He thanked me. How'm I meant to keep on doing something after that?

[When he's not even sure he wants to.]
