I was thinking of why I didn't like the later seasons but wasn't sure how to put it, and you hit it on the head.
Part of House's appeal was that he was okay with who he was. He knew his flaws but he accepted them even if he acknowledged they made life tough for him at times. When the writers kept trying to change him into a better man I think they missed the point of his character.
And that should be the better message, isn't it? The thing that makes him a "good" antihero. He knew his own flaws and knew it sometimes got him into unnecessarily difficult situations, but it was who he was and in the end, the only person he ever truly hurt was himself anyway

I had the same experience. Once I discovered House - around the beginning of fourth season, I downloaded and did a marathon like a junkie. I loved his gruff, unapologetic manner. I loved that he was brilliant, yet an asshole. It was an excellent combination.
But yeah, around season four, the formula started changing. Too much personal life, too few episodes mired in the medical, rather than romance, etc.
I haven't watched the finale but it's on my PVR. I'll have a drink and watch it tonight. :D
I guess my only regret is that they didn't use more of the "new team" members. But I forgive them since it is the finale and they needed to prioritize people who were more special to House (actually, now that I think about it, there WAS one person that arguably should have also been in there but wasn't but I didn't mind for the same reasons as you mentioned -- it was one of the characters I found had gotten annoying).
Have you been following the season though? I think you can't JUST watch the finale. You need to watch at least the two episodes before it (so marathon the last three back-to-back). Because the driving plot behind the finale only took center stage in the third-to-last episode.

House was who he was and I'll miss him.
