Summary: “You, Donghae, impossible.”
Even though you had someone, the both of us still met.
I loved things simple, I hated sophistications. I stepped into this world simply, lived in this simple little province located in a tiny part of the earth where most of the people didn’t even know about its existence and I had never encountered any complicated situations before.
“Never?”
“Yeah, Hyukjae has never failed any tests before.”
“Wow, that’s amazing.”
I stared at him for a five good seconds, and got back with a shake of my head and a ‘no’.
“But, the amount of times I’d failed my tests are equivalent to the amount of meals I’ve ate since birth.”
“Exaggerating…” I coughed a laugh.
“Donghae is really bad at tests. Even his girlfriend had difficulties in tutoring him.”
“Girlfriend?”
“Yeah, he has a girlfriend in the city. She’s intelligent, and really pretty!”
“Ah…”
Donghae was a transfer student from the city. He was also Sungmin’s friend, and of course, Sungmin was my friend. And so, we met. We’d just simply met.
The sunrise we saw together had a beautiful purple shade.
Donghae and I had the same route to get to and fro school. Whenever we walked home together after school, the sunset we saw had a beautiful shade of orange.
“The sunset here is really nice.” Donghae commented, releasing an obvious smile of relaxation.
“Yeah.” I held the straps of my backpack tightly.
“You can’t afford to see this in the city no matter how rich you are.” Donghae laughed. “It’s nature’s mother.”
“Mother nature, you mean?”
Donghae avoided my eye contact.
“I love the dawn though.” He changed the subject.
“The dawn?”
“Yeah, I’m always missing it on my way to school.”
“Oh, because you’re always late.” I tried to contain my laughter.
Donghae sighed.
“Pfft.”
“Why? Why did you laugh?”
“Nothing.” I looked straight into his eyes. His doe eyes signified his straightforwardness and honesty. A breeze intruded and we spoke the same time at the next moment.
“Hyukjae,”
“Donghae,”
We laughed together.
“Tomorrow’s Saturday,” Donghae started.
“Shall we view the sunrise?” I ended.
“Promised.” We hi-fived and held each other’s hand for about half a minute.
I’d wanted to hold you since that day, but you showed me your sadness abruptly.
When I was walking along the pavement that was leading to our highschool, I spotted Donghae sitting on the grass before the boundless lake. I sat beside him silently and sighed.
“And I thought I’d be the first one to arrive.”
Donghae spoke nothing but laughed - not an optimistic one, it was a pessimistic one instead.
I didn’t know why, I could just tell.
“Did anything happen?”
“My girlfriend called.”
“Hmm?”
He kept quiet and looked forward, staring at the horizon of the lake, swimming in his sea of thoughts.
“Isn’t that a good thing?” I looked at the same thing as he did.
“Yeah, I guess so…” He didn’t budge an inch, just his mouth moving slightly.
That day, after we saw the sunrise, Donghae went straight home.
The proper goodbye I couldn’t say was changing me into an honest person. Even though I’m bad with words, ‘I love you’ didn’t spare a mercy on me.
On the first day of school Donghae showed no sign of any unhappiness. He greeted me with a hit on the back and a wide smile hanging on his baby face. The vibes he was giving was juvenile.
“Hyukjae, the sunrise we saw was pretty, isn’t it?” Donghae exclaimed when Sungmin and he and I were having lunch.
“Sunrise?” Sungmin stared at me while chewing on his meatball.
“Yeah.” I responded to the both of them with a faint smile.
“Yeah Min, it has a tint of purple on it.”
“Hmm, is that so?” Sungmin took a glimpse of me again.
“I love that colour, right Hyuk-ah?”
“Yeah…” I looked at Donghae, I could see his smile curved down a little bit at that moment.

“Did you know what happened to Donghae and his girlfriend?”
I shook my head.
“Apparently his girlfriend called him one day and she broke down when she was talking to him halfway through the call. They started their conversation off cheerfully and chirpy though. But probably his girlfriend misses him too much. So she broke down. And Donghae is kind of troubled now.”
“Ah, that’s… troublesome.” I had nothing to say, I just didn’t have any suitable word to fit in right now.
“Donghae might go back to the city anytime soon.”
“Oh.”
“Don’t fall in too deeply.”
“Fall? What?” I turned my head to him.
“You, Donghae, impossible.”
The closer I got to you, the further away you seemed to be.
When I was on my way back from school, I saw Donghae. He was sitting at that same old spot when we came to watch the dawn and apparently, well what I’d thought, he was waiting for me.
“Hey.” Donghae called up to me. “Let’s walk home together.” He smiled.
I did not respond a single thing, until we’d reached the route that was going to split us apart.
“Goodbye.” I was looking down to Donghae’s shoes. He bent down a little to look into my eyes. “Goodbye.” Donghae repeated.
“Go-good” I stuttered.
“Huh?”
“Don’t… go.” A drop of tear landed on Donghae’s nose. “I don’t want to say goodbye.”
“Hyukjae?” Donghae touched his nose and found himself bewildered.
I looked up and to the other end of the lake.
“Sunset is more sorrowful than sunrise, huh?” I smiled, it was meant for myself.
“Hyukjae?”
“Donghae, I have always loved…”
“Loved?”
“The sunrise.” I wiped away my tears and walked away, heading back to my home.
Donghae, I have always loved you.
Days after, Donghae left.
Even though I should have given up, up until now I’d always loved you.
Donghae, the goodbye I didn’t manage to say wasn’t intentional. Because I felt that I might confess anytime if I were to talk to you ever again. You know, I hated complications. I tried to keep my life to the utmost simplicity but my life was never simple after you came.
That purple sunrise we saw that day, it’d be good if we could see it again.
I gazed to the horizon and looked into the sun. And the first tear of the day streamed down from my eye.
