hm, to tackle my insurmountable pile of work or to update livejournal?  looks like it's going to be the latter.

I feel like I haven't actually talked about my life in a really long time, so I guess I'm going to blurt out some bullshit on that topic in the fifteen minutes that I have right now (after that I must make myself go to the darkroom).  so,

my best advice to you on the graduation front is to get into grad school any way you can. school is the safest place to be right now, with the economy the way it is. i was in your exact same position a year ago, contemplating my options, and i had myself convinced that with my experience as editor-in-chief of a national award-winning literary magazine, i had an immediate foot in the door towards an editorial position. i thought that these companies would want nothing more than to hire an ambitious and intellectual college grad with a good GPA (magna cum laude) and editorial experience. WRONG. unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, finding an entry-level editorial position means knowing people. if you have an in, by all means, take that opportunity, but otherwise, i would highly recommend that you take some time off if you need to, study for the GREs, and stay in school as long as you can

watching you (and most of my other friends who graduated from Goucher last year or the year before) struggle to find jobs in the field has really made me fear graduation. I'm not sure that the economy is going to go up, however, over the course of a year or two - and if it doesn't, then I'll be saddled with student loans (probably immense ones) and a still-sagging economy, a still-dying print publishing industry, and quite possibly an only slightly better chance of getting a job.

out of curiosity, though: did you look for jobs outside of Baltimore and, if so, where?

i've searched for jobs everywhere in the MD/DC area. even with very promising leads, i end up being very sorely disappointed...i just wouldn't want anyone to be stuck in my position a year from now, you know?

start searching for jobs now, if you can.

thanks for the thoughts! I really need to talk to professionals in fiction publishing and get their takes on the subject. I wonder if they feel the same about needing experience in the field before bothering with grad school. some folks have told me how hard it is to go back to school after you've been working for a while, which made me wonder if I wasn't being smart putting it off, but perhaps it would be for the best.
