post-class and breakfast, slightly more awake

sitting in pearlstone today I overheard someone say "I tried to read a book once...it didn't go well."

it's times like this that I regret attending goucher college...or being born into a world where people don't appreciate their own capacity to think - I don't know.

on the other hand, it really is beautiful out, isn't it?

learning, anger

I agree that it sucks that aot of people don't appreciate and take advantage of their ability to think. However, in this situation, coming from someone who can't read very well myself, it could be because this person has a learning disability that does not let this person read very well. I know for me it is very hard to read a book fast or be able to understand it. It is frustrating to hear other people talk about all the books they've read so quickly when it takes a long time just to get through one page. This person should be praised for trying to read no matter how easy or hard it was for them. Maybe they did give up and that's not cool, but they tried, and maybe they'll try again.

And yes it is beautiful today! Yay spring is coming!

I don't think it's a dig at difficulties someone has. If someone tried nad has trouble, that's fine. But it's when people announce it to the world like they think it's funny or cool to say they've never read books. C'mon, despite havign trouble, you have read books and enjoyed it.

I really don't think that's specific to goucher. You'll find people saying stupid things at any college institution...the world is filled with obnoxious people and they will be everywhere.

Oh I don't think it was a "dig" at people who have difficulties reading either. I'm just saying that it sounds like this person doesn't like reading because it is so difficult for them. You're right, I have read books I've loved. But this person maybe hasn't had the chance or courage to pick up a book since this "traumatic" experience. We've all been in situations when we're not good at something and we try to make light of the situation by making a joke out of it or making fun of ourselves. I think that's what this person was doing. That, or putting it out there that they want help in that category.

I'm all for making fun of ourselves, but I think there's the chance the person may just think that the comment was hilarious. And thre's making fun of ourselves and then there's just sounding ridiculous.

Ugh. Goucher is all I think about anymore. Goucher and the fact that I don't think I'm going to get in, and if I do get in, I won't have the money to pay for it, and if I can pay for it, then I'll worry about the stupidity of the people there.

It's a good process, although it's driving me crazy.

as shown by the above statement, I don't think goucher's too incredibly exclusive. not that I think you're at the level of said person, but, well, I feel like either applicants have grossly exaggerated their abilities or goucher doesn't turn too many people down as long as they can pay ( ... )

Goucher is pretty exclusive...well it was when we were applying. Clearly they're accepting more people now but it definately used to be more exclusive (why do I keep wriitng expulsive??).
