Yes, it's canon. John Winchester really is a horrible father. But slightly better than Shinji's father from Evangelion if that helps^^

There's a lot of good Wincest fics but the ones I've read take place before season.4 and 5 of the TV show. Before the mythology expanded beyond control.

I think comparing anyone to Shinji's father (unless it's for the worse) isn't that helpful, sadly.

I'm not surprised the mythology got out of control. Those things tend to do that. I am all about the brotherly interactions, esp since I don't know the canon at all. ^^;
