The World of New America

Dec 01, 2009 10:18

The nuclear World War of 2012 (AKA WW3, Nuclear Holocaust, etc) had shattered earth as it was previously known, decimating everything within sight. The world is a dark, barren, and desolate place and the few survivors around the world had taken up residence in underground caverns and tunnels throughout the continents. State and country governments across the globe had, of course, realized that nuclear war was more than likely coming, and had built large, underground bunkers that were sealed safely and securely away from the public eye that were intended to house the noble (presidents, kings, leaders), the brilliant (scientists, musicians, artists), and the highest bidder (some of the wealthiest people in the world). Only once the war was over and everyone had finished destroying one another did these bunkers open up for survivors.

Unfortunately, most of the survivors were struck with radiation poisoning; the after effects of the bombs and nuclear warfare had instilled itself into the very DNA of these people. Not all who were hit with the ‘illness’ died however, in fact it was quite the contrary. Some did sicken and die, but most overcame the illness, brushing it off as little more than a bout of the flu virus that had somehow survived the war that had ravaged the land. Those that survived the poisoning were only allowed into the bunkers after the symptoms disappeared.

These underground bunkers grew in size, starting from small, village like establishments that quickly grew to the size of cities akin to old Atlanta, Detroit, New York. Governments formed from the wealthy and leaders in each ‘state’, but it was corrupt - filled with greedy, power hungry officials using their positions for personal gain. Bribery was common, and extortion, money laundering, embezzlement and ‘unholy alliances’ grew at an alarming rate. Drug trafficking soared - after the war, such things were nearly impossible to find and marijuana, cocaine, and heroine were highly sought after, and exorbitantly expensive. Tensions were high among countries - Europe had banded together, as had the old USSR and the Orient. Canada had ceded to the US, and North America became ‘New’ America. The world regarded each other with distrust, suspicion, and hate. Communication was almost non existent.

Five years passed, and in 2017 underground interstate systems were set up all over the world to interconnect the bunkers; the land above had become far too toxic to be inhabitable, and anyone who ventured above ground was now as good as dead. Time grew rougher, gangs and mobs solidified and took over governments, and people began to starve. Eventually, one man in Old America grew to power, calling himself only the ‘Savior’, and to the people, he truly seemed worthy of his name. Riots and crime went down dramatically, corrupt officials were jailed and some even executed. Farms were regulated, tunnels dug and jobs created. Things eventually began to settle down under the elusive ‘rule’ of the ‘Savior’. Tensions began to relax with other countries, but things were still strained.

People began to regroup and attempt to find some sort of peace in the world; survivors met, married, and had children.

In 2025, the first ‘misfit’ was discovered by the general public. A young boy, approximately eleven or twelve was found running through the streets of New Atlanta, hands clenched into fists that were blue with liquid fire. Press conferences and meetings were held by the government, and mass panic ensued by the public. What was he? Who was he? Where had he come from? These ‘misfits’ were regarded with fear, hate, and mistrust, and the government was quick to ‘collect’ all those that showed signs or symptoms of being a Misfit. Numbers of these occurrences grew and in 2040 after an 'episode' in New D.C., the Savior decreed Misfits illegal, and anyone caught harboring one was subject to extreme punishment, usually imprisonment or death. Failure to turn oneself in as a Misfit was also punishable by death.

Once a Misfit was turned in, they were never seen again. The general public was uncertain of this at first, but after repeated reassurances from the Savior that it was for their own benefit, the unrest settled. Propaganda was distributed; leaked footage from security cameras at a Misfit asylum showed brutal deaths of orderlies by Misfits who couldn’t control themselves or their ‘abilities’. These abilities range from pyrotechnics, telekinesis, metalbending to shapeshifting. Anything and everything was possible with Misfits, their DNA genetically altered from their parents and grandparents because of the radiation.

The general public was comforted by the fact that the government was ‘looking after them’, but the Misfits lived in fear. When taken away to a place only known as the ‘Facility’, Misfits only knew that they would never be seen again. Many moved to the Belowground. Down below the bunkers and already underground cities, the Belowground was a sub-sewer system very few ventured into, due to the complexity of the tunnels and the fact that it was extremely dangerous. It was dirty, unsanitary, and hot. In the Belowground, the Misfits that had fled from the government made their home, and eventually came to be led by a man known as The Watcher. After several years, this unknown man was leading the Resistance, a group dedicated to the rescuing of Misfits from capture and proving they were not a danger to society.

Very few Misfits attempted to live with 'normal' humans, because of the dangers it posed. Most that chose to do so were with the Resistance.

Governments always have and always will keep their dirty little secrets, and there are always things going on behind closed doors. No one ever wondered why the Savior didn’t age. Instead of being placed in simple ‘asylums’ to be kept from the public for everyone’s safety, Misfits were tortured, experimented on, and those that cooperated (mainly out of fear) were used for various ‘duties’; espionage, assassins, etc.

Several of those 'experiments' did escape with aid from sympathizers, but not all should have escaped. There are those that the Facility has destroyed in such a way that they are no longer recognized as human beings. Some could shift into monstrous creatures, while some were simply content to sever heads and feast on the blood of people. The select few of these that were discovered were labeled as simply more 'misfits', and did nothing to help those like Anna, who were simply trying to survuve.

This reign of government was most similar to Communism, though at this point, most people in New America don't care how regulated their lives are. They're simply happy to exist, and blissfully turn the other cheek at the 'mistreatment' of the Misfits.

*Notes*

Most things were preserved by collecting DNA along with samples of each animal possible. Of course, keeping live animals in underground bunkers (at least, until the cities began to expand) was extremely unsanitary, and officials took note of this rather quickly.'Test tube babies' of various animals were created and DNA stored in various stages in order for cultivating later.

Water is unsuitable for any kind of organic life, and as a result, it is nearly impossible to keep fish alive. A few underground reservoirs were created and the attempt was made to farm fish, but each attempt failed due to some sort of contamination. It became a delicacy, and was only available in certain parts of the country.

Children must be applied for, and the parents approved through the government.

Adults that have the money can perfect their bodies in whatever way they so choose - clones can be ‘created’ and held in cryo as a sort of ‘life insurance’ plan for the fabulously rich and famous. Enhancement to personal physique can range from entire facial reconstruction (extremely costly) and breast augmentation to injections (far cheaper) that simulate large muscles or the like.

*In the year 2112, one hundred years after the war, the surface is still uninhabitable. Underwater tunnels have been built to link continents, and underwater stations were created and maintained in order for peopel to travel the ocean's depths safely. Communications have now been fully restored, and trips to the surface vie military and advanced hazmat suits were now customary and necessary quick travel to other countries. The opening of the underwater tunnels provided people hope, but also opened a bridge to more troubles.
