Timeless Fashion

It's no secret that I feel the hat is a vastly underused and/or misunderstood element of today's fashion. As I was asked for advice regarding this matter, I thought I should share two simple rules as a public service.

The first rule is really quite simple, wear what you like. If you don't feel good wearing it, then it won't look good on you. This is true of most fashion.

The second rule is to try something on and be honest with your first impression. Like so:

Step 1: Try something on.

Step 2: Look at yourself in the mirror.

Step 3: Evaluate your response. If your first reaction is uncontrollable laughter, or "My God! What was I thinking!", take it off and find something else. The designer tag won't save you from feeling like an idiot, even if you wear it on the out side.

1st picture: Having a bow stapled to your head isn't fashion no matter what the boutique owner tells you.
2nd picture: Beware of hats that remind people of sperm fetilizing eggs! The association won't do you any favors.
3rd picture: If it looks like your brain has just exploded from the side of your head, you should consider changing your hat.
4th picture: Birds nesting on one's head are unfortunate consequences, but rarely make good hats.
5th picture: The model looks startled, and well she should! Fashion that startles isn't my first choice.
6th picture: I find the colors not unpleasant, but the overall effect is once again reminiscent of "Things one shouldn't staple to one's head."

As to the specific question asked, here is my advice:

T, I do think you should stick to something that is simple and classic. It all depends on your hairstyle, or course. My first thoughts would be something like the following:

Classic designs and simple head coverings that accent your own features without overshadowing. Choose the brimmed style if you're going to be out in the sun. (That's rule number three in my book: wear a style that serves a purpose. Don't ignore functionality for fashion. Do both!) Obviously, you'd have to match the colors and patterns to your outfit, but I honestly think you'll be happy with the result.

I hope this has been of some help to everyone. When you go out today, don't forget to accessorize!
