Linux dump/restore don't complain about failing to recognize ext4 filesystems. Instead they happily read them in and write them back out. But what they read/write is garbage because they don't actually know how to deal with extent-based inodes ( Read more... )

At my previous job they set up this fancy backup system. At some point one of the research associates noticed that the drive was full and that it was not making new backups. She informed the Appropriate Authoritites. Nada. 3 months later...said appropiate authorities made an update to everyone's desktop and somehow lost everyone's data. Aaaaaaaand...no backup had been made for like 5 months, cuz the disk was full. So 5 months of data had been erased. It wasn't gone, because of people's notebooks etc, but the original source files and so forth were all gone.
