I could pretty much take this shot with any camera. The SLR has a $400 20mm prime lens that's *very* sharp even at f2.8. This lens is well known for being better than the more expensive "L glass" line. It's shot under a full spectrum lamp that's used for color proofing which simulates daylight so you get a much more accurate range of color to begin with. I shoot in RAW so I'm able to do some initial developing before I do minor color corrections in Photoshop. It's about 5 minutes of my time to shoot, process, and post.

Get a Rebel XTi (EOS 450D). With the kit lens it should cost you $800.
