If I'm going to start watching Bones at the start of S6 because that's where the show happens to be on some random channel, is there anything I should know?
Sort of? If I had to guess, I'd say the showrunners of Bones learned a very good lesson from SG-1.
Zach was my favorite character, an intern from the beginning of the series. (And that's saying a lot as I like most of the characters very much.) He's not as pretty or sexy as Daniel, but he does have that adorable-geek thing about him.
When Zach was written out, instead of replacing him the writers gave the forensics lab a rotating set of interns. Each interesting, endearing or annoying to different degrees. For a long time Temperance Brennan, the lead character, refused to warm to any of the rotating crew because nobody could replace Zach. I think it was a good move on the writers' part to incorporate the fans' upset over the loss of a favorite character into the story itself.
that looks like exactly what I need to know - thank you! S6 (or at least my run of it) starts next week so I'll let you know what I think and if it makes sense. I'll come back here and refer to my crib sheet when I get confused.

Nobody can ever replace Zach.
(Not helpful. Not helpful at all. Just trying to get you to watch the earlier seasons. *GG*)

But yes, I believe they handled Zach's departure as well as could be done.
