Let there be light

Have just replaced a (supposedly equally bright, supposedly long-life) burnt-out low energy bulb with a normal one. I can see again! It's not horribly dim in the room any more! That's an experiment I won't be repeating for a while ( Read more... )

I hate, hate, hate those "energy efficient" bulbs. I have to turn on more lights to actually see, so I don't think I'm saving energy at all.

I've also had problems with them burning out quickly. So much so, that I started writing the date I installed them on the bulb base. One didn't even last a month. They have mercury in them, which makes them a hazard to throw away, and if one breaks, there's a risk it could be released in your home.

On top of all this, the light they put out can trigger a headache, so I think I'm going to turn into a hoarder of the old-fashioned bulbs.

Yes, instead of just having the lights in the middle of the room on, I always had to turn on another two lamps to be able to see to do anything. With normal bulbs? Just the main lights. Interestingly, the normal bulb I put in is also giving off a much warmer light - had never noticed that before.

Hmm, I've not had problems with low energy bulbs at all and actually like the whiter light they give off. What make and wattage are you using?

I HAVE read that some don't last long though, maybe due to being badly made. Can't remember where I read that. I think you should complain if that happens. Keep the receipt for a while.

The only energy bulb I have a problem with is the one in the bathroom which is an older one and takes a minute to get to full brightness, but I'm too lazy to get the chair and the screwdriver and the claw-hammer to prize the glass shade off the ceiling and replace it. Putting it in the first time was a nightmare!

Phillips and, er, 12W? 11W? Whichever one says it's a replacement for a 60W bulb (it's lying).

I've had a general problem with lightbulbs going over the last few weeks, which is just random coincidence. Had 3 go in the kitchen, one in the hall, one in the lounge. Unfortunately, every time they go they ping the power board and the whole house goes dark until I can fumble my way to the board and flip the switch again.

Note to self: must buy lightbulb for hall.
