I read most of the comments the other day, and with the exception of a couple of 'she's expressing an opinion', the rest of the 350 plus comments were calling for her sacking, and that of her editor. Seriously - if she wrote that she was 'grossed out' watching 'two black people kiss', she would be fired in a second. But it's okay to write that about fat people? One of the most ignorant, crass things I've ever read. She somehow managed to even make anorexia sound acceptable. She should go and read The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf, just for starters.
It really is surprising to me that so many comments were made and that so many of them were disapproving. To be honest, that's really not my experience on the internet at all, and not in the real world either.
And the classic responses to your comment about fat people vs black people would be "but black people can't change that" / "it's not their fault", because bigots always assume wrongness of someone who isn't like them, and also that everyone will want to adhere to some kind of accepted desirable state (in their view). It wouldn't occur to them that other people don't want to change themselves, just want to change the assholes they have to deal with every day.
I just get grumpy about all this. Her post was horrifying in some ways, but just the status quo in others, and I was shocked all over again when I should be well beyond that by now just from my own life experiences.
I can't believe I still haven't got around to reading Naomi Wolf. It's now on my list.
