Twenty First Lines (meme)

Jul 30, 2009 11:37

I saw this meme over at dotfic's journal, and it sounded interesting and not too taxing on the old brain, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Take the first lines of the twenty most recent fics you've written, and see if you notice any patterns, etc.

My twenty lines, from oldest to newest )

It's interesting how illuminating this meme is. I was doing things I had no idea I was doing!

What I love most about these is that they're so engaging. There's no waiting a line or a paragraph or a page or two to see if the story's interesting enough to continue because for the most part, you get it done in the first line. I think that's amazing.

You are too kind! I think the first lines do something, yes, but it's weird, because to me, these first lines don't indicate which way the story's going to jump. Hmmm.

My titles are weird - sometimes I have no clue at all, and need a beta to step in and give the damn thing a name, and sometimes I know in my bones what the title should be. On this list, I particularly liked Monkeychucker, Knees on Nylon, I Like the Girls with the Boom, The Eyes of the Observer Make the Mystery, Squirt, The Dearth of the Cool, and especially Hairstreaks and Metalmarks.

monkeychucker and girls with the boom are my favorites. :) titles are hard though -- i usually steal mine from old tom waits songs.
