In which I admit a failure

THIRTY DAYS OF MEME: 15 A FanficI... don't read fanfic. Pretty much at all. I hardly even read other people's threads in Roleplaying games I'm in. I know this means I fail at fandom, or something, especially as I've probably written more fanfic then I've written. If you count gaming, I DEFINITELY have ( Read more... )

The thing is, that I treat the internet, where fanfic takes place, like a participant activity, not a spectator one. If I'm going to mix stories with a computer screen, it's because I'm constructing one. When I look for something to read on a screen, I look for blogs and news and opinion. It's just the way I spend my time.

I thought I was like the only one!

Why should you read fanfic? There is so much other stuff out there. Plus RPG threads are often the most difficult things to read as a spectator because of the inbuilt repetition and POV shifts. It is an entirely different style of writing to other types of fanfic. I read fiction constantly off-line so it was a foregone conclusion that I became obsessed by fanfic. I was also a lurker for many years. My first response to the internet is to passively consume, whether it is in fanfic, discussion or opinions.

5 Conceptions of Oracle by xenokattz (700 words). Because I read it and wondered what you would think of it. I also wished I'd read more canon so I would understand the subtleties of what was going on.

I've mostly read shippy stories in the fandoms we share so I can't think of anything else to suggest. What do you like to read?

P.S. Did you find your comics? I came in when you were away and missed you :(

I like shippy stuff, if it's a believable ship and not in SPN.

I like that five things one! The lst Smallville reference had me giggling.

The only shippy things I read in spn are Dean/random females because it is hot. I did write this Supernatural ficlet. I wouldn't precisely say that I'm proud of it, but it amused me.

deird1 writes excellent Buffy fic. There are lots of very thoughtful drabbles and this and this are two of the best longer stories, there is so much detail.

I'm slowly putting all of my fic on my Dreamwidth account, but you're certainly under no obligation to read it. (The fic I'm most pleased for having written -- the Crossover Monstrosity -- isn't yet up on that account and probably won't be for a while until I go through and overhaul the HTML.) I don't tend to rec fic all that often, since I always feel bad about not linking to all of the good ones that I read.

I'm so happy you posted this. I loved your Dark is Rising fic way back when I was a lurker and I was trying to find it again recently with little success.

Thank you! I've been terribly slow about reposting my fic -- ever since I ditched my Web site hosting provider and its increasingly extortionate rates, I've been trying to rebuild my personal fic archive elsewhere, and it's taken a lot longer than I'd expected. Fanfic requires a surprising amount of upkeep. ^^;;

I have no idea what you might like; most of the fanfic I've written is Disney and possibly not your sort of thing at all. But I'm very fond of this Aristocats one-shot:

Mostly because it's essentially 'Disney character gets laid', but I got a bunch of nice comments about how sweet and tasteful it was.

SO MUCH THIS.

I'm not even going to rec you something to read because I see nothing wrong with how you treat it. If you get bored and are interested in how I write (and especially how I RP), you already know exactly where to go and find it yourself. :D And whenever I start doubting my abilities, I think about that off-hand comment you made after reading my "Sam between S4 and Shatter" fic. Because it made my whole day-year-life something.

... I can't even remember what the comment was.

BUT. Yes, I do go and read rabbithole occasionally :)

It was probably nothing to you, which made it even more awesome to me. :D

I read an unhealthy amount of rabbithole when bored, I think. << That's the extent of my fanfiction search-and-read.
